Baloo, quit creating straw men. I never claimed college football was immune to politics, but in this case you're reaching. And how the hell did Briles cost Texas a Crystal Fottball? Please be specific.

He probably did cost them a chance in 08.

Any chance Baylor or TCU win a national championship by finishing 1 in the AP poll if either of them blow the doors off of their bowl opponent and Ohio State wins the playoff in exceptionally unimpressive fashion?

Baylor is ahead of Ohio State and TCU is right there as well.

Do you mean in the penultimate week before the CCG?

Saban put them 4th and Stanford 3rd.

And that's how the other coaches should have ranked them too.

The AP championship is as meaningless as the FWAA and the NFF championships, and the only people who care about it are self-important media hacks. What matters to the players and the coaches is who gets to hoist the Crystal Football over their heads with their school-colored confetti raining down on them.

All the other SEC coaches ranked them #3. All the Big 12 coaches ranked Alabama #3. FYI, Oklahoma State beat Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl.

Yes. Remember the stupid tiebreaker the Big XII South had?

False. He put them at 5.

False. The AP championship was the most meaningful metric in the poll era. For years the UPI(coaches poll) handed out a national championship at the end of the regular season and before bowls were played. Are you freaking kidding me?

The Coaches Poll is a huge farce. It's political AF and coaches don't have time to watch teams from across the country when they have to focus on their team and that week's opponent. Most of the time, some rando in the athletic office fills out the poll and runs it by the coach.

eta - Still mad about 03? I like LSU a lot, but USC's AP national title is legit too. Hard to say which team was better without seeing them play on the field.

I know for a FACT Art Briles doesn't fill out his own listing sent in.

But hey...there's no games this weekend so we need something to talk about.

No, I'm stating fact. Do you deny what the players and coaches value?

Obviously I was talking about the BCS era. Wasn't that made obvious by my mention of the Crystal Football?

Considering the fact that the other teams in the picture were an undefeated Alabama and one-loss USC and Florida teams, that doesn't sound too egregious. At most it cost them 3 points in the Coaches' poll.

UPI/Coaches Poll awarded the crystal football before the BCS.

And I did say in my post that USC's AP national title is as legitimate as LSU's BCS title. Both human polls had them at 1. It was the product of a flawed BCS formula at the time.
