The Browns. What a terrible name. I heard it was named after their original owner. Sounds like something DonnyTrump would do.

As was ours.

I generally am a fan of any name that has legitimate historical value. Even if it is one of the more generic mascots. LSU's Tigers is tied to the state in the Civil War, Clemson's is just kind of arbitrary.

Coastal Carolina is a good one. Apparently, a chanticleer is a fancy name for a rooster.

It is. I think it comes from some French folktale. They used to be about of our university system but then they broke away. If I'm not mistaken they wanted a mascot different than ours but still have some sort of "nod" to their past ties with us. Hence the rooster but of a different name.

Houston Texans made a nice attempt at some history, even though they were an expansion frachise in 2002.

The Texans names derives from Lamar Hunts Dallas Texans. Lamar Hunt moved his team to Kansas City(became the chiefs) becasue he no longer wanted to complete with the Cowboys.

Houston Oilers were an original AFL franchise but they of course went to Tennessee.

Bob Mcnair took the Texans name to keep the city/franchise connected to the AFC.

it works. But the logo and the font of the Texans is horrible IMO. THey could do better.

Texans is a dull, boring, generic name

No history lesson will change that

Ft. Wayne Pistons

If I remember correctly, the owner had a Piston producing factory in Ft. Wayne.

Another one of those lucky fits when they moved to Detroit.

I liked the USFL names...

Chicago Blitz, Oakland Invaders, Boston Breakers, Memphis Showboats, San Antonio Gunslingers, etc.

XFL had some cool names too... my favorite being the Birmingham Thunderbolts. Their helmets were awesome too.

The Fighting Pickle of UNC School of the Arts here in Winston-Salem. It's a sports mascot for a school without any sports. Famous Alumni that didn't play sports Danny Mcbride, Jada Pinkett and a bunch of people you'd recognize if you saw them. Their campus vehicles are wrapped in pickle graphics.

Really like the Houston Rockets, which is odd since they were also the San Diego Rockets but it fits in Houston and was just a generic name in San Diego.

The Titan rockets were made in San Diego, so there was a local connection. The name just happened to fit in Houston too.
