Briles had a reputation as a dirty coach when he was in Stephenville, and if you're dirty by standards of Texas HS football...

Can someone give me the cliff notes over why he's being dismissed?

I'm surprised they finally did it, but they were getting an awful lot of heat.

I know zero about Texas labor law, but I'd imagine they either have really strong evidence to fire him with cause or their going to be paying some serious dollars for a long time. He had signed a big extention.

Texas is an at-will employment state: as long as the firing isn't due to one's race or gender it can be for any reason. Baylor could fire Briles for resembling Grumpy Cat.

The key is the contract: if they can prove the firing was "for cause" (such as not reporting an assault to the Title IX office) then they could get out of any buyout.

Or likely some BMD's said they aren't going to continue supporting the program in the state it's in, and agreed to fund the buyout.

ESPN is reporting it, too. Players are thanking him on Twitter. He gone, it's over.

This is how you nip a situation in the bud. Ahem Ole Miss Ahem.

Really didn't think they were going to have the balls to do this

Lol good try buddy.

Sounds like someone who just got their arse kicked by him when he was there.

Not saying this didn't need to happen, but the year I was in the locker room at BU with Briles as my coach he did nothing but instruct me the right way. That was back in 2009 so obviously things changed, but leave it to a bunch of grown arse men on the internet to judge a man without ever even meeting him.

Multiple football players have committed sexual assaults and the school did not report them as required by law, and likely helped cover up the crimes with the assistance of the local DA.

Yeah, what a bunch of assholes. Judge a guy on how he treated a student intern, not on creating a rape-at-will culture.
