It has ALWAYS benefitted them when they've been anywhere near the title mix. SOS has never kept them out of anything; it has only given them a boost against their other top-rated peers.

When? 2003 maybe?

In 2007, the VaTech game/win basically got us in the title game.

In 2011, we had a pretty brutal OOC. I guess I can't argue that "benefitted" us, but it's certainly not what hurt us.

I actually sort of hope a crap OOC schedule bites us in the arse one day.

Yes. OU and LSU both had higher SOS than USC.

Oklahoma, USC, and Georgia all had two losses and lower SOS than LSU did.

Had LSU lost the SECCG, they would have had to be voted out of the top 4 by the polls to be shut out of the title game. That's how strong that schedule was.

Pretty inexcusable for a power 5 conference team IMO

Then half the SEC is inexcusable also.

I love this collective attitude people have. You'd think that teams in certain conferences owe it to America to play 12 top-5 teams every year. Baylor had a really weak OOC. "Inexcusable" all the bossypantses say, yet they're mathematically incorrect as far as this year is concerned. Turns out Baylor would have been in the playoff had they won enough games.

It's not like LSU is playing a Baylor joke of a schedule.

They have played plenty of decent OOC games over the years.

2003-@Zona
2004-Oregon State
2005-ASU
2006-Zona
2007-VT
2008-No one
2009-@UW
2010-UNC, WVA
2011-Oregon, @ WVA
2012-UW
2013-TCU
2014-Wiconsin

And they have upcoming games against Wisconsin, Miami, Syracuse twice (if they count), Texas, UCLA, ASU,

Baylor hasn't played a P5 OOC game since like 2009 when they played Wake. Other than Wake and Washington State they haven't played any P5 OOC teams since 2003.

Although they played TCU a few times before they were in the Big XII.

I believe Tennessee now has an opening with UAB gone. Take it pay off one of the other schools.

Tennessee already has one Big 12 team (Oklahoma) on the 2015 schedule. I don't know if that would make them less willing to also schedule Baylor

Baylor got left out for two reasons:

1. Their non-conf strength of schedule was awful

2. The Big 12 doesn't have a championship game.

#2 is the biggest reason they're not in the playoff IMO. The conf. championship game is a risk/reward game.

On the one hand a very good team has to risk a possible loss (usually to a really good opponent) in an extra game that another team does not. Ex. 1 loss OSU this year; FSU this year who was the only undefeated team in the reg season; LSU in 2011 who finished undefeated. A loss in the championship game for any of those teams likely would have bumped them out of the National Championship picture in favor of a team that did not have to "lay it all on the line" one more time.

On the other hand, it is an opportunity for a team to boost it resume that a team in conf. without a championship game doesn't get. OSU did EXACTLY that this weekend. If not for the championship game performance, Baylor is in and OSU is out. Florida did the same thing in 2006 while Michigan sat at home. It's what allowed LSU to jump a 10-2 UGA team that was ranked higher than them going into the SECCG

Buy out Lamar or Rice and find a power 5 school who could use a schedule boost.

However, I still think the Big 12 will continue to get treated like this until they get a conference championship game.

I bet it wouldn't have mattered, but I could be wrong. If Baylor is given an extra win over Kansas State in the hypothetical B12CG:

School - winning % - opps w% opps opps w%
Ohio State .923 .571 .535
Baylor .923 .484 .529

Baylor's OOC really stabbed them in the cock.

LSU plays McNeese, Syracuse (our "big" home-and-home OOC team for next, who just went 3-9 this year), Eastern Michigan, and Western Kentucky.

STFU. SEC still plays a conference championship and LSU still plays in the SEC west bro against the teams that have made it to the national title like the past 7 years.. who knows how many but the Alabama and Auburn been there a zillion times..

LSU travels to Bama next year.

LSU also typically opens up against Oregon, TCU, and now Wisconsin the past few seasons.. so who else is playing these schools OOC?

Piss off

If you're bored by these games, I am too, but if you think this is anything other than what is smart for the program as far as on-field success is concerned, you're quite mistaken.

I have no problems with cupcake games... When we scheduled Syracuse who knew they were gonna be 3-9 this year??? Just like back in 2003. We scheduled Zona the year they went 11-1. who knew they would suck so bad 4 years later....

Yeah, the no championship game thing is being overblown since it likely would not have mattered if they played Kansas St twice and it could have worked the exact opposite for them if any of the top four had lost their CGs.

It was certainly the OOC that hurt Baylor but it was also a worse blow than could have been predicted since Oklahoma St, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech were all down.

I keep seeing mention in other threads that Oklahoma or Texas wouldn't have had the same fortune as TCU or Baylor this year due to their names.
However, I tend to think a Texas or Oklahoma would have been criticized a hell of a lot more than Baylor with that same OOC schedule.
