...against the Cubs and Phillies, respectively, over service time manipulation. Bryant is represented by Scott Boras and Franco by Ryan Foster.

Bryant has a legit gripe. I'm less familiar with Franco's situation.

The Cubs absolutely held Bryant down because of service time, but they did it within the rules that were collectively bargained by mlb and the players union. With that said, the service time rules are just stupid and need to be (and most likely will be) changed next December.

It definitely happened, but aren't the rules the rules?

The rules are negotiated by the MLBPA. If they don't like it, then negotiate a better deal.

Franco was called up the day after Bryant.

This. Everything the Cubs and Phillies did is evidently in bounds here.

Scott Boras will make every interaction with the Cubs as difficult as possible.

He likes money, cubs have money, will have more money and are a going to be competitive for a while, I can't see it having any influence on other players.

And since this was filed in April, it's clear it didn't have any effect on bryant/boras/cubs relations either.

Agreed that it's within the agreed upon rules. That being said, is this battle really worth it to teams in the long run? I certainly would not forget it once real negotiations were upon us. If Bryant continues to play at his current level he will be a hot commodity and would be well within his right to stick it right back to them.

Or he could do what just about every other player ever has done, and sign with the team that pays him the most money.
