I originally thought his idea of "diversification" meant having more than one steroid supplier.

He thinks Harper should be more of a base stealer. Easier said than done -- hard to steal bases on a home run.

Besides, if he's not that quick, then he could occasionally swipe one but he's not going to be the next Lou Brock.

He doesn't have to be. I remember watching Pujols constantly steal bases simply because he was smart about when to go, and that guy runs like a granny with the trots.

But it's a good skill to pick up if he's going to get a lot of free passes. Put yourself in scoring position and hopefully it will backfire.

It makes sense that someone who walks a lot could benefit greatly from punishing opposing teams by taking extra bases. That's why Bonds is the sole member of the 400/400 club... Oh, and the 500/500 club.

ETA-And base stealing has a lot to do with skill. Someone with Harper's raw athleticism could certainly improve on that skill.

hard to steal bases when you have all those guys clogging up the bases in front of you.

Constantly? Dude has 3 seasons with double digits steals in a 16 year career. 9 of those he stole 5 or fewer bases. Never did he "constantly" steal bases.

OK.

Teams (again, not that this matters in this conversation):

-Marlins: 2 World Series Titles (and only 2 GB of the Nats)

-Nationals/Expos: Never past the NLCS, last in '81 as the Expos

Player:

-Bonds: again, 500/500 club. Regardless of what you think about his steroid use, he has something to say about stolen bases.

But we're just thinking about this year, right?

My use of "constantly" was misleading. My point with him is that when he would steal a base, it wasn't because of speed. He was smart about it. He was a great base runner.

so harper already has 6sb on the season, which is his season total from last year. So Harper already starting to reapply the sb to his game and bonds chimes in and says he should do it more?

isn't that what he's doing?

and while being a threat to do everything is obviously great, it's also a lot tougher in today's game than when bonds was playing

In what way is it a lot tougher to steal bases in today's game than 10-20 years ago?

Is there something to back this up, or is this just that "new is better than old" narrative that plagues the MSB?

I'm not saying Harper HAS to do this, and this will put the Nats over the edge. Barry might just miss being in the news and wanted to be quoted. But it's not BAD advice.

it's tougher to be a threat to crush the ball every time so that you're getting intentionally walked.

Look we can pussyfoot around this steroid thing all day long if you'd like, or we can admit that bonds was a stud, with an added advantage harper doesn't have.
