I always thought the ball had to hit the ground before the kicking team could take possession.

No

Clemson couldve called fair catch and it wouldve been their ball at the spot it was caught by the kicking team i think.

But I have no clue what the rule is for how close you have to be to call fair catch

That's a rule for some high school leagues so it's not an absurd question

Should have signaled for a fair catch. Then it's kick catch interference.

It's 100% a rule in Louisiana High School Football, which follows the National Federation High School rules.

I tried to look it up online for college but they don't have their rules posted. You have to buy the rules book.

The Clemson player wasn't in position to make the fair catch. There was no way he was able to get to that ball. It was just an absolutely perfectly executed play by Alabama.

If he would have been in position, yes, he could have signaled fair catch, and kick catch interference could have been an issue.

lol

the nearest person for clemson was 5ish+ yards away. sure, stand there and call it, when your now 8-10 yards away from the ball.

I hate when people say "I can't stand". Why can't you stand? You got a bad hip? You get a headrush? You see where I'm going?
