Winning a grand slam tournament is as much about injury prevention/conditioning as much as it is talent. Nadal chooses to play a style that takes a toll on his body, therefore must accept the bad that goes with the good of playing that way. The "injuries" that happen to him arent random or unlucky, they are part of process. So Stan won this match straight up, i am tired of the injury talk

Just finished watching the match. Congrats to the Stanimal. I don't care what Nadal's excuse is.

Very subdued reaction... Everything about this match was odd.

It's like they waited to cheer to see if it was ok with Nadal lol....

Wawrinka 60/1 through to the Final!

Pulling for Fed big time in other semi vs. Rafa.

Just got done watching on DVR. Stan was lights out up until the Rafa injury in the 2nd set. I had to fast forward through a lot of the 3rd set, was just tough to watch when it looked like Stan was about to blow it. Was about to lose it when he got broken in the 4th set but he stepped up in the end.

Stan is an elite player on hard courts now. Will be interesting to see what he does during the clay season.

He was...and unlike Federer, Stan has the best one had backhand in the game. Stan just matches up better against Nadal than Federer than Federer does and, couple that with the way Stan has been playing the last two weeks and the way he started out the match, Stan was going to beat Nadal today regardless as to whether Nadal tweaked his back in the warm-up or not.

Get out of here with this crap. In the 7th match of a tournament nobody is going to be fresh. Nadal will usually be more wore out than a normal player because of the way he chooses to play the game. He plays rough and uses a ton of muscle on every shot, unlike the wawrinkas and federers who uses natural racket head speed for power. It is no excuse for Nadal when he is injured, it is a product of the game he closes to play

Ok

Watched Stan in the 09 Davis Cup in Birmingham and really got to liking him. Glad for his victory.

Feel bad for Rafa. He gives 110% in every match ( don't think his body can take the punishment too long) and always hate to see him lose. But again, congrats to the new champ.

jg8623, did nadal not injure his back? I could swear he did. Therefore, making Stan the better conditioned and better prepared athlete

Yes he did injure his back. Anyone can injure their back regardless of conditioning

I don't know a lot about tennis, but I do know that Nadal's biggest asset is his conditioning and him being able to outplay or outrun his competition since he's been playing. To just say he was in worse shape is retarded

So if Richard Sherman pulls his hammy in the Super Bowl and D. Thomas ends up having a good game on him that just means Thomas was in better shape?

And his biggest weakness is his durability. Therefore him pulling up injured in the end of a tournament is directly related to conditioning. Nadals physicality gets all the praise, but nobody seems to want to give it any if the negativity. For those who don't know tennis, compare it to a bob sanders in football to a lesser extent

Wondered this forever. It's the exact same thing.

It would be really confusing calling score if 30/30 was called deuce as well.

There's a reason why 40/40 is called deuce

So a guy who could never finish a season and his career is similar to a guy who's won 13 majors and is praised for his endurance? Come on, you know that's a terrible comparison.

I get that the injury could have most definitely been because of the long tournament, but at the same time an athlete can get hurt in the first minute or the last minute. It's not dead set on conditioning

You obviously don't follow tennis, Nadal is nagged by injuries due to his style of play. He didn't have a freak injury like James Blake. His injury came from the stress he puts on his body.

I'm not trying to attack you personally, but the nadal injury crap is getting old. His last 15 losses has all been because of injuries. Well in tennis, an individual sport, keeping yourself durable and flexible is as important as a forehand or backhand

All the top tennis players have been nagged by injuries, wasn't federers excuse last year an injury?

And your right, I don't follow tennis closely but I'll follow the majors and such

You don't win 13 majors and put yourself on pace to break Feds record by always being "Injured". Professional athletes live hurt. I'll admit that conditioning could have played a factor in him being hurt, but your implying that they simply happen just because of conditioning.
