Art of the technical foul

In a hot debate with family members. As a basketball coach I feel you can use a technical in a few ways to benefit your team. First way, if you feel your team isn't getting the calls, you use a tech to let your team know you have their back. Secondly, I will use a tech to get my teams attention, as well as the referees. I often feel after a technical the whistle will blow in my favor a little more than before. Agree or disagree

Depends on other factors such as score, time remaining, how well has your team been shooting/playing defense.

I think it can definitely like a fire under your team's arse. But it all depends on the officials you're working with. Some it'll get their attention, others it'll just put you under a bigger microscope.

I have officiated high school basketball for six years, and it takes a lot for me to dish out a T. I think you have a bit of a point in having your team's back, however if you are the clearly inferior team, it usually is not a smart move. It can also be a momentum stopper too (in the wrong way).

emoney would you give a t for a kid laughing at a call? also, curious do you have to warn a fan before tossing them from a contest. my team was given 3 techs in 3 minutes. they called one on a girl after a foul was called on her, there was a foul but on another one of my girls. she said the foul should of been on the other girl. she got a tech. i feel referees throw them around too easy today

T's are never a positive thing. They don't "light a fire" or "pump a team". The kids need to be fired up and pumped up to prepare for the game. The "will to win" in properly preparing in practice. Good teams don't play emotional. Good teams play under control and with great effort. I'm currently in my 5th season as a basketball coach and have received zero technical fouls although I have gotten very close to getting stuck several times. I learned from those times that coaching my team is more important than hounding refs.

Technical fouls can change the momentum of a game...both ways. I have seen teams come together and even re-energize them after a T has been called against their coach, but then again, I've seen it cause teams to fall apart.
I've seen it from both sides...I've coached and I've officiated.
As a coach, I very seldom tried to get a T called on me, but at times it did wake up my team and they went out with a new vigor and their play improved. Then there were the other times which I'll admit I deserved "almost" all of them.
As a referee, I very seldom called technical fouls on coaches. The best official can block out the coach's nonsense. Most of the T's I called were on players, either for unsportsmanlike behavior against the officials while on the floor.

Nope! Whenever my HS coach would get a T on him we would all play extra hard! If he got a T we knew that he was pissed and we better win or we would be doing suicides after the game until we couldn't walk. He was like a Bobby Knight clone, it SUCKED playing for him but he did get the most out of us.
