It's funny that the two greatest relievers I've seen in my lifetime basically blew the series for their team.

People forget how dominant Dennis Eckersley was.

Eckersley was the most dominant closer in the game from 1988 to 1992, finishing first in the A.L. in saves twice, second two other times, and third once. He gave up five earned runs in the entire 1990 season, resulting in a microscopic 0.61 ERA.

He walked only 4 batters in 76 innings.

In 1990 he became the first relief pitcher to have more saves than baserunners allowed.

But in 1988 WS Game 1 - he walks a dude that was hitting about .196. And then Gibson comes up with a gimp and the A's go from a sure win to being totally demoralized.

Eck hadn't allowed a HR since early August...and in October he does something he doesn't do, walks a guy and then gives up a homer to a guy who can barely stand.

Same with Mariano and the Diamondbacks in 2001. The Yankees were leading 2-1 heading into the 8th and Torre brings in the most dominant closer to finish them off.

He had a string of 23 post-season saves without a loss. Up to that point in 51 career post-season games his ERA was .70.

And then then he loads the bases on two hits and Gonzo comes up.

Also, 20/27 of your titles came before 1963

The most historically successful teams in all the sports have frontloaded success because dynasties have become harder to come by over the last 30 years:

9 of the Packers 13 championships were before the Super Bowl era (1967)
13 of the Celtics 17 championships were before the NBA-ABA merger in 1976
14 of the Canadiens 24 championships were before the NHL expanded in 1967

He messed up the throw to 2nd and then gave up a bloop hit. Worst loss ive experienced as a fan. After 9/11 and the late home runs in yankee stadium, it seemed like the yankees were destined to win.

Alfonso Soriano wouldve owned the city after what wouldve been the winning hr.

From 1923 to 1978 the Yankees won 22 titles...that's 55% of the titles won during that period.

That doesn't sound like a fun time to be a baseball fan.

Well your math is a little off, 22 titles in 56 seasons is 39.3%. From 1923-62 they won 20 of 40. They were also in 29 of 44 from 1921-64

There were only 8 teams in the AL for most of that. Expansion started in 1961, by 1970 it was up to 12 teams and 14 by 1977 and now 15.
After 1965 they’ve still won the most, 7 and been to 10. Still the best but thankfully not as bad as the first half of the century.

Don’t forget the massive choke against Boston

If they win that series they still lose the World Series to the Cardinals who were arguably the best team in the league that year. I still blame the Yankees for giving Boston that ridiculous momentum to lift the curse.
