I think the public in general attributes virtually all of those to Goodell. He's a punchline and has been for years specifically because of those items mentioned.
And the general public wants him fired, while his bosses continue to give him raises....

You can repeat it all you want, but the "he does their bidding" argument is one of the more stupid things to be repeated ad nauseam on this website.

If that was the case they wouldn't pay him $40 million a year. If it was that simple they'd pay him minimum wage. Your claim is that he's the most micromanaged executive in the world and the only executive prohibited from any autonomy, decision making or authority of any kind. Is that really your claim?

being hated means he's good at his job? Are you out of your fricking mind. Even if I had a deified portrait of him above my bed, I would contend that's stupid. I'm not even saying he should be fired but rather asking if it's possible because I hate him so much I wish I could clone him repeatedly for the purpose of killing him in an increasingly violent manner.

As popular as NFL football is, are you saying they can't find a commissioner that would make them a lot of money and not give the NFL bad PR?

As much money as the owners are making, more than ever in their history, are you saying they should fire the guy at the top?

It is very conveniant how you seem to want to give him all the blame, yet none of the credit
I asked a question, you can say "I really don't know" or you can give examples of how he specifically made these deals happen.

Or you can avoid the question.

So you think Goodell was the guy in the room actually negotiations the tv deals?

Yikes

Meh, they'd be making money regardless. That's primarily why they've kept him around thus far, but you've got to think that they could buy themselves an inordinate amount good will from NFL fans if they got rid of him unceremoniously. Fans around the country would rejoice like the end of Return of the Jedi.

Given all of the black eyes and screw ups lately at the feet of Goodell, it's not inconceivable that the owners would think about making a move now. This has been a year and a half now of constant public (and now legal) embarrassment for the league.

However, if they don't get rid of him now, it's obvious that Goodell is privy to some extremely incriminating info regarding concussions and the owners are scared of cutting him loose.

He is the man at the top. A thousand people are responsible for making the NFL money. And yes, he is one of them.

You think anyone in their right mind would be the owner's puppet for minimum wage?

They'd have to pay me $40 million as well, having to answer to 32 senile arseholes. Frick that.

What?

Goodell is a discipline guy. He's said this since he came into the office. He LOVES handing down harsh punishments. That's what makes him so difference from Tagliabue.

This is true.

They're eternally grateful to him (rightfully so) for taking the public heat for both the player lockout and referee lockout a few years ago, as well as the concussion heat in court depositions. He's been their fall guy for a decade now, which is how he's become so powerful.

Even though he 100% deserves to get fired, he absolutely won't. Because of this reason right here, Goodell is here to stay until he retires, dies, gets really sick, or whatever.

sure, but the point still stands.

There's any number of high profile lawyer types who can do his job. I don't know what discernable skill he has that means no one else could have the NFL where it is now.

Also, the whole idea people throw around that all these suspensions are decided by the owners and not Goodell, those guys can't prove that either fwiw. The owners are pretty smart, I have a hard time believing they're intentionally manufacturing all of this bad PR.

You sound like a conspiracy nut. Of course he listens to his bosses, but he's also paid to advise, execute, etc. you seem to think he's a roomba.

Im not arguing he's bad at his job outside of public relations (where he is a concrete failure) but my god, you have zero understanding of the logistical impossibility of what your are suggesting. You think the owners fully understand the finer points of litigation, finances, government? No. Goodall runs their business, and is the more than a representative figurehead. He runs park avenue
