Are Golf companies and Golf courses pricing themselves out of business?

Here's a break down of equipment for 2016
and as far as balls...
•Dollar Sales - Down 6.1%
•Unit Sales - Down 8.1%
•Average per dozen selling price - Up 2.2% to $31.00
I heard recently that in the US a course is closing it's doors every 72 hours.
500.00 drivers, 370.00 for a wedge set, typical iron set 800 to 1000 (PXG like 3500). 70.00 to play courses like Greystone and Pelican Point.
Do you think that these companies and courses would have a raise in revenue if they lowered their prices 15% or so?

Golf just isn't all that popular with the younger generation. It's still relevant but not what it was at tigers apex

Having kids moved me from a club membership to a public round once every six weeks.

I have a 16 year old sister that plays golf at Little Rock Christian Academy
LINK
oh shite my sister on the website and shite lol (the black one lol)
Anyway I asked her what she wanted for her 16th birthday she said some new golf clubs. I don't know shite about golf and she explained to me she could basically score like 5 points better with better clubs. She shot I think like 93 with no handicap (don't quote me on that it was 6 months ago and I don't know shite about golf but it was better than i thought it would be. I know 60 is really fricking good. It was around 100 or so. She's getting looks from colleges) at the last event she went to and can drive it well past 250 yards she's fricking 16.
Her dad usually buys her golf stuff so I have no idea. I'm like okay let's go to the golf club store or wherever and pick out what you want and I'll buy it.
$1,110 fricking dollars. for like, middle of the pack I'm an old white guy that half arse plays golf on the weekends clubs.
I did tell her if she kept a 3.0 all year i'd get them for her and I did but frick that shite. She's lucky she's good lol. I'm go win so much money off her when i can take her to the bar and bet random dudes that they can't drive a ball further than my little sister
And she LIVES at the golf course. I'm afraid to ask my mom how much she pays for her membership.

golf is a ton of fun but as a 24 year old its expensive and when you do cough up the money to play you have the old men complaining about pace of play. They play several times a week and hit from the old mens tees if they arent finished in under 3 hours they start complaining.
sorry for the rant played last week in a group of 3. pace of play was a little over 4 hours and we finished in 3 hours and 20 minutes but still got complained to by the group of old guys behind us.

As much as I love golf, this is very true. Millennials in particular do not seem to enjoy the leisurely pace, nor do they want to spend 4-5 hours outdoors.
Interestingly, Top Golf, however, seems to be doing really well. The future of golf, at least for the short term, might be in similar innovative driving ranges and short courses that combine technology and instant gratification.

If the old guys were complaining and you weren't in a hurry, why not let them through?

As a millennial, I disagree. Problem is price.

Course prices keep the trash out. I'm ok with it.

was a group of 12 old guys split up into 3 4somes so wasnt really plausible to let them through but after hole 3 we were able to put some distance between us and relax. Not the first time ive played and had old men who i assume are usuals act like they own the place.

Golf is kinda like horse racing in the sense, even if you want to do it, you don't know where to start and just say frick it and don't do it.
Horse racing ain't some shite you just going to get 100% in one day and be oh okay I know the all horses that have lord of war in their pedigree are probably good on sloppy tracks lol (like seriously they don't lose on sloppy tracks i don't care how bad they are they love that shite) it takes a LOT of investment of time to get and patience of people showing you the game.
My sister had that with golf with her dad, who plays golf. I had that with horse racing with my dad who is a gambler's gambler.
It's not so much the price. If I wanted to do it i'd do it. It just needs to be made more.. accessible. I mean, I've literally never swung a golf club in my life the biggest fear i have is going out and slicing a ball and killing someone or looking like an idiot. there needs to be something you can do to play golf and learn golf and not look like, i don't know, an idiot i suppose. In horse racing you just fricking lose like everyone else.

Foot golf is the new thing

I agree it's not as popular and takes a long time to play a round. A lot of folks just don't have that kind of time. It can be an expensive hobby. Equipment prices are outrageous.

People can't afford to play, discretionary income is way down for the masses ; manufactures change models too often. Taylormade almost went bankrupt and Nike just quit making clubs. During housing bubble too many developments added courses that are now struggling. They either have to cut their rates to get more golfers or get the regulars to continue to pay the higher cost. Their will always be the rich that play but the younger generation is broke, not looking good going forward. I spend way too much playing golf but I enjoy getting pissed off.

Yep. It is just too expensive / difficult for people to pick up playing. A starter set and a couple of lessons is $3-400 minimum and that barely lets you scratch the surface.
Top Golf will pick up the people who just want to have fun for an hour or two and everywhere else will struggle.
