Admittedly, if you're not exposed to football early on, it doesn't make a ton of sense when compared to other sports. It's basically the line infantry of sports.

Football requires a lot of strategy and hard work just like any other sport.

There are shitty fans in every sport. People act like soccer is sports' version of "vegetables." "They're good for you and intellectuals like soccer, etc. etc."
I'll guarantee not a single person who thinks that way has ever met some true hooligans. They put even the trashiest of trashy NFL fans to shame.

thats what they said about boxing too.

less kids are participating and less parents are allowing their children to do so in favor of sports like soccer and basketball.

our culture is shifting rapidly away from risk taking and violence - and many prominent doctors are discouraging football participation.

the game has peaked, popularity wise, especially when there is essentially zero international appeal

Eh, maybe. Soccer is a pretty pure sport, whether you like it or not. It's corrupt as shite, obviously, but at its essence it's a game that makes sense and has spawned a ton of other games/sports.

Yep. Football is an incredibly slow moving game. That somehow convinced some people it's fast paced and full of action.

eta: I still like it though. But less and less all the time.

me too, but my interest continues to wane.

i mostly just follow for the betting aspect- the sport is lucky it has such a huge fantasy draw, brings in a lot of casual fans who other wise wouldnt give a shite

Watching football is much more social than any other sport, which I think is one main reason for it's popularity in the US. You have minutes at a time to talk, get another beer or more food, play armchair QB, or whatever else. You simply can't do that and not miss a lot of action with any other sport.

Why does it have to have international appeal to be successful in America?

well, considering our society continues to globalize, it would obviously help

there is a reason the NFL keeps pushing for games over seas..

Yeah, tell me about it. Prior to reading this last night, I had no idea that there was international competition. Why would they do that?

That's my point.

And the breaks between every few seconds of action.

Soccer has less than 6.5 minutes of play if we only timed the parts of the game that were actually meaningful

You're being generous. I love all the soccer hipsters who claim, "ZOMG! Soccer is non-stop action!!!!"

Really? I see the two or three players closest to the ball running. The rest of it is a bunch of 5'8", 155# guys in knee socks standing around watching.
