After having a bit of an internal struggle, I've come to the realization that I want to/should revive my fandom of the Houston Texans, and reluctantly leave my Saints fandom behind. There is so much I appreciate about Louisiana, New Orleans and the Saints, but this feels like the right thing to do. In retrospect, I believe I made a mistake, and I wish to rectify it (this is serious business, man).

There was a time, in my first few years of following the NFL, when I attempted to be a fan of both the Texans and Saints, but it became clear that I wanted to settle on one or the other. Ultimately, I chose the Saints, as my first sports love was LSU football. From that love of LSU, I began to associate football with Louisiana, and that lead me to the Saints. And while my passion for the Saints hasn't waned much, I have occasionally felt a sense of disconnection from the team, for obvious reasons, as well as a tinge of guilt and/or remorse surrounding my fandom.

Houston is my home, it always has been. While I love New Orleans/Louisiana, it has never been home to me, as my plans of living there were unexpectedly altered. As a result of that, my personal ties to Houston far exceed those to anywhere else. Part of sports fandom is about embracing where you are from, and I'm only one team away from (once again) fully supporting the major Houston teams. Since the time I started caring about sports teams, I've been a fan of the Astros and Rockets (which makes me feel conflicted, when considering the obvious connection between the Saints and Pelicans), and I've even become a casual Dynamo fan. So, why wouldn't I support the local NFL team (again)? It feels right, makes sense, and would even make attending games far less of an inconvenience, and far less costly.

(There were additional elements that factored into the impetus for this change, but explaining them would add quite a bit of length to an already excessively long post, and no one here actually cares.)

While I don't love the idea of changing allegiances, I see this as more of a homecoming. And I fully intend for this to be a permanent decision, the final adjustment to my football fandom. I have no desire to be a bandwagon fan.

I will always have a soft spot for the Saints, and will never root against them, outside of Texans games. I hope New Orleans gets to celebrate many more great football seasons in the years to come, the fans deserve it. But, I'm looking forward to waking up on Sunday mornings in the fall, and taking the short drive to NRG Stadium to watch the Texans play, to cheer for my city's team. It will be good to fully embrace Houston, once again.

So, why create a thread about this? I don't know. Perhaps to put my thoughts into words, for my own sake; to bring a chapter to an end. I suppose I've also been here long enough that some of you might take notice, though I doubt that.

Anyway, to give this thread purpose, I'll pose a question: has anyone made a similar choice? If so, why?

The Saints suck and so do the Texans.

Cool. Good for you man. IMO it would only look bad/weak if the Texans had just won the Super Bowl/are heavy favorites going into next season

Or you can be like me and like the Texans, Saints, Astros, Rockets, and LSU.

I was born in New Orleans and grew up liking the Saints and LSU. There was no NBA team when I was a kid. I liked the Rockets and Astros because they were the closest teams and my dad sometimes had business in Houston and we'd sometimes go to games, and obviously N.O. had no NBA or MLB team.

Then we actually moved to Houston so now I was for sure a fan of the Rockets and Astros. But Houston had no NFL team at the time so I was still a Saints fan.

When the Texans joined the NFL I wasn't really a fan as I had no connection to the Oilers... but over time I've come to support them like the other Houston teams and I'm still a Saints fan. I'm a Saints and Texans fan.

Let's get this out of the way:

I was a Cowboys growing up in north Louisiana, when it was quicker to get to Dallas than New Orleans. As I got older, I followed the Saints more and more. Eventually, it just started to feel right to consider myself a Saints as I was clearly more invested in them.

I still follow the Cowboys somewhat and I cheer for them sometimes (even against the Saints when I can aggravate my friends), but I'd rather the Saints win than the Cowboys.

I will say, it does give my a different perspective than a lot of longtime die hard fans.

Ryan Mallett as quarterback for the Texans was a hell of a time to be alive. Good luck with all that.

There is like literally nothing wrong with being a fan of multiple teams.

As I mentioned, I've gone down that route before, and I didn't care for it. I only have enough room for one team, and it should be the Texans.

I'm glad it works for you, though.

I root for the team's I rooted for growing up. Parents went to LSU and whole family is from LA so that was LSU, the saints and the rockets. Houston had no nfl team and Louisiana had no nba team. I grew up in Houston and I tried following the Texans and just could never care as much. Same thing with the pelicans.

And when LSU played UT in the 2009 CWS, I ended up wanting LSU to win more than UT, where I was a fricking student. I can't tell you why.

Same here. Been in Houston since 2010. Have always been a huge Astros fan. Rockets for NBA (meh) and Dynamo games are a blast, even though I'm not a huge soccer fan. Of course, huge LSU fan and alum.

With little access to Saints games the last few years (had Sunday ticket for 2 years), I've found myself pulling for the Texans more and more. Now, I watch highlights and keep up with the Saints but I find myself losing interest more and more. I'm sure the 7-9 purgatory doesn't help but the distance is taking its toll.

I do wish the Texans were still the Oilers. Much more unique name and franchise but it is what it is.

Yeah, it's really unfortunate that Houston wasn't able to, at the very least, retain the Oilers name, like the Browns were able to. But, as you said, it is what it is. Besides, the name and color scheme of the Texans has grown on me, over the years.

The fact that you thought this was worthy of a MSB thread is a sad enough indictment of your life.

Oh, please, there are worse threads created on this board on a regular basis. That said, I even called this thread unnecessary, so the wasted click is on you.

I am still a huge Saints fan and I have been living in DFW area for almost 10 years now. My second favorite team is whomever is playing the Cowboys that week.

I get it - I've drifted away from my beloved Pellies since living near another NBA team for the last 4 years.

I was even rooting for the Packers some last year after the Saints blew that game against Denver and I knew that stat whore Brees was going to go HAM in the last 3 meaningless games and ruin our draft position (again) for his own selfish bullshite.
