A lot of Pens fans called that one the dead pigeon logo.

I like the Mean Penguin logo. It was an alternate logo in the late 80s/early 90s.

Kind of looked like the Wilkes Barre-Scranton logo except it was coming right at the viewer and didn't have any red.

Yeah that logo and the uniforms from that era were terrible, I had a white road Martin Straka jersey as a kid though. The diagonal Pittsburgh lettering across the chest are my least favorite jerseys of all time.

I like keeping it classic and simple so when they went back to the '73 logo and COLOR this year it was perfect.

Lets also just forget about the Vegas Gold era too, awful. Logo was correct, just the wrong color. That change never made any sense with the Steelers/Pirates being yellow gold.

The skating penguin is OK. But the shield logo and uniforms were so much better. I liked the Rangers old Statue Of Liberty old uniforms too from that era. Unfortunately, they only wear the plain Rangers diagonal script uniforms now. Yawn. I really don't get the love affair of all the '80s uniforms and logos. But, for the most part, I think they were pretty stale. Even the Blues don't really impress me.

I was surprised by that. A real shame Stanley Cup winning coaches and GM don't have a long shelf life anymore.

Blake named GM. Robitaille named team president. I had no idea they both previously had roles with the team.

What logo was that? I don't remember it. I don't see any "dead pigeon" at all with the old one.

never did. serge savard and jacques demers were run off a little over 2 years from winning the cup. they had made the playoffs the year after the cup. then year after that didn't make it. then 0-5 start next season got them shitcanned. what have you done for me lately. if you are not making playoffs you especially run the risk of being run off regardless of past performance. Those kings guys did not make playoffs this year. voila!

watch some games in late 90's. they had white and black with the sleek bold looking penguin head and chest on it. those teams with stu barnes, marty straka, jagr, ron francis, darius kasparitus, etc wore them. the black jerseys that had the diagonal pittsburgh on them. those looked like shite, i agree. the others were fine.

look here! first 4 photos for examples

along with all O6 teams with great traditional logos, the blues have had a nice logo for ages like the flyers, flames and oilers. too many teams change it up which speaks volumes in SOME ways. depends what you like i guess.

Down Goes Brown ranks your bandwagoning options if your team has been eliminated. He's always a fun read.

I love old logos, particularly the expansion era logos because they are so clearly not market tested or designed by a committee concerned with "branding". Sometimes you get something inspired like the Blues logo, sometimes you get something awful like the Caps logo or the Canucks V-neck. Sometimes you just get goofy like the Penguins cartoon, which is just plain fun.

But we're talking about an era that gave us the Flyers, the Devils, both Flames logos, and of course, the best logo in sports history: the Whalers.

nice list. no arguments here.

well id flip Calgary and Edmonton. one team built their team legitimately, the other just lucked into top draft picks. one has great jerseys and logo, one has a hideous jersey and stupid logo.

just my .02

i think it is ok caps went back to the original logo but i did like the caps logo with the eagle similar to what olie the goalie wore in 98. maybe it was worse than i can recall. i will have to look it up.

that damn islanders fishermen logo was sacrilege. much better now back with original.

hartford did have a nice logo, no doubt about it. nice how they worked in the H and W on the whale. ingenious design.

yup. that was a nice read and fairly accurate. I'll pull for all canadian teams to do well overall.

flames are definitely better logo wise. oilers are just very traditional and have stuck with it over the decades. kudos to them.

wow. a couple of these brackets have caps-habs playing in ECF. several have caps winning it all.

quote:

Why the Washington Capitals will win the Stanley Cup: Besides being the best they’ve ever been, and having no glaring weakness to speak of, they have no choice. This is the last great shot the Caps have at winning with this core, since there are a bunch of unrestricted free agents they can’t afford to bring back come July. Alex Ovechkin is 31 years old and starting see his scoring dip a little. They need it to work this season or this entire era of the best teams in the history of the Capitals will be a giant waste.

Hope you understand.

If its rangers vs bruins i doubt i get in without paying a stupid price.

Wow, Andrew Berkshire took the words out of my mouth. that's pretty much been my standard line: the Caps are deep, loaded, and about to get blown up. This is the window. The time is now, and everyone knows it.

Caps are clearly the Paper Cup champions. They don't play the games on paper, though. But you'd hope that one of these times, having the best team would actually matter.

All of those guys are pretty high on Minnesota.

I think we might know a lot after tonight. If Minnesota comes out flying high and dominates the Blues, it could be a short series.

If it's a tight game and the Blues win or lose late, then it'll be a very good series with the Blues having the advantage I believe.
