Why were the nations in the former Soviet Union allowed to compete together? The U.S. should have won this year

Probably because those nations didn't yet have the infrastructure to compete on their own.

Because Samaranch was corrupt as hell and got bought off by Russia.

Despite requests from Ukraine and Georgia to compete independently, the IOC convinced all 12 former republics to field a unified team during the Summer Games in Barcelona, Spain.

The IOC granted provisional recognition to each of the national Olympic committees of the 12 republics on the condition that they take part in a joint team.

"I think all wanted to go independently, but they agreed with us that for the last time they have to take part as a united team," said IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch."

I remember as a kid being confused as frick by that and asking my dad what that "Unified Team" was. In my 10 y/o mind I was thinking if it had the word United in it, it had to be some kind of off brand American team.

Let's be honest, the Unified Team was still mostly Russian.

Not like there are a lot of hidden athletic gems in Kyrgyzstan.

I have a better question. Am I the only one that is surprised that no Spanish basketball phenomom emerged as a bastard child of one of the Dream Team members? Specifically Charles Barkley

The Soviet Union ended on Dec. 26, 1991. Just not really enough time since they were all training as part of the Soviet Union up until then. With the winter Olympics just 2 months away and the Summer game 8 months away no time to for any meaningful way to do that. The Soviet olympic system was highly centralized. Everything was controlled through Moscow and the CP of the USSR.
