They were there to trade jeans.

Tretiak:

When we got home to the Soviet Union, people on the street asked us 'why did you lose? And to whom? Some students?'

What were you drunk or something, what happened?

The 1980 election wasn't until later in the year. Carter was still in office when the Winter Olympics happened.

I don't know b/c I was only 10 at the time. Being from LA I didn't know much about hockey or its rules. But it was the greatest sporting event I ever watched to this day. I can remember being so nervous during that game and can still relive those feelings. I don't think I'll ever see anything like that again.

RR was a candidate. He was elected that fall and took office in January 1981.

The upset was a much needed boost to national morale.

The Soviet Union was hit by the flu. Their best players were playing sick. It's not that difficult to figure out.

This is the big one, IMO. We see hot goalies carry teams through NHL playoff runs every year.

Jim Craig never amounted to anything in the NHL. He got got "hot" for one game against a team that was sick.

Oh, yeah, the other massive thing that I stupidly left out is that Tikhonov pulled Tretiak in the first freaking period. Massive mistake and colossal failure. Perhaps the biggest reason the US won that game.

Tritiak was pulled because he had a fever from the flu.

Throw some players in from Boston and Wisconsin, and Brooks built a single team from the best players from only the best four or five college teams in the country.

The team was based on college players from Minnesota, Massachusetts, and Michigan.

The game was shown on tape delay in the US. We all knew that the US won when it was broadcast.

How long was the delay? Remember, no internet then

Neither did Ray LeBlanc. Doesn't take anything away from his accomplishments in the '92 Olympics.

True

Not true.

Very few people outside of Lake Placid and the news services knew. There was a news blackout and it wasn't reported on the national news broadcasts that evening.

This is false.

Relatively very few people knew the results before the game aired on a three hour tape delay. There was a spoiler broadcast locally in DC that spoiled some.

You got a link reporting players being sick or just hypothesizing?

It was announced that the USA beat the Soviet Union at the 6:30pm/5:30 ABC World News Tonight broadcast. The game was shown on tape delay at 7 Central and 8 Eastern on a Friday night.

CBS, NBC, AP, UPI, MBS, Reuters, and NPR and PBS all announced that the USA beat the Soviet Union before the broadcast.

You got a link for that? I can only find mention of a few local broadcasts that spoiled the result.
