Here is the breakdown estimate they gave my wife:

books and supplies $1200
college of Eng fee $800
"personal" $2766
room/board $12,898
stafford fees $102
tuition and fees $10,696
"transportaion" $2898

Total: $31,360

I think we can throw the "personal and transportion" estimates out. We pay his cell phone and he just got a new truck.

Books will be half that. Room and board (includes food/booze) will likely be half that. College of Engineering fee is included in Tuition. They make theses cost of attendance high to be able to pay athletes and to make the school seem more expensive.

Some advice I will give to you to pass to your kid.

Don't schedule a class before 9 am. I don't care how early you got up in high school, you won't make it to your 8 am freshman year. Also don't schedule class on friday afternoon. You won't go.

Don't buy any of your books before class starts. Go the first day and point blank ask the professor do I need the book? Chances are you will but if you don't there is no need to waste $200 on a textbook you will never open.

Even if he has no interest in joining a fraternity, have him go to summer rush parties. I met tons of new people that I still count as friends even though we are in different fraternities or they didn't wind up pledging.

Thanks for the input. I thought the room/board was astronomically high. I don't think we'll need to include his booze in his costs. He's never been big on drinking. Hell, I try to give him a beer on vacation or by the pool and he won't take it.

I'm sure that'll change when he gets there though.
