So google announced theyre going to finally launch their own phone, obviously they currently dominate the world market with android via all the phones they're on but to finally release their phone is big to me. What if this thing is cooler than the iphone finally, you've gotta believe google is going to launch a superior product thats going to be cheaper. Do you think this could be the beginning of the end of the iphone's dominance? I'll be interested to see the specs on this thing and if it becomes more than a rumor

Obviously apple has the sticky ecosystem, but Google is not going to make a shoddy product if they do it. I can see this thing being an iphone killer if its say just as amazing if not more and then say $399-499 vs iphones being priced in the stratosphere. Im an iphone 6s user but im not opposed to switching if its comparable and less money, would love to try something new been an iphone user for nearly a decade now.

I mean apple stock isnt that bad if you look at it, even if earnings do not grow, with that monster of a buyback in place + the legion of loyal fanboys even if the Iphone 7 is a dud which its shaping up to be, I guarantee its gonna sell some record and people are gonna camp out to get it.

But but but, if google delivers some product that knocks the iphone sideways, apple is gonna be in major major trouble bc the iphone is the bulk of their revenue.

With that said Apple is a solid one to sell puts on 70-75 a year or two out and if you get it down there cool, the stocks gonna be fine

Do you think they phone they talk about is the modular project ara they were gonna release next year? because thats the one ive been waiting for.

Hard to say. If they can find a way to differentiate it from all the cheapo Android phones that degrade the Android OS "brand", then maybe. What I mean is, it can't be just another mid range Android also-ran. And at the upper end, you already have the Galaxy S phones, which IMO are already matching, if not beating, the iPhone in terms of coolness factor. And Samsung seems to be doing a good job of building its own IoT ecosystem. I think they've certainly beaten Apple to the punch in that area.

Google has had a somewhat spotty track record as far as quality. The Pixel C tablet has gotten mixed reviews because of bugs and inconsistency. So they'll have to up their game with a phone.

Just looking forward, I don't think another branded phone is what people are looking for. I don't see that moving anybody's needle. I think it's going to come down to what the phone can do as far as interaction with the various IoT protocols and devices.

I've owned Apple on and off as a trade and a core position for nearly 20 years. The primary issue that I have with the company right now is what Dabigfella mentioned in his last post: an over reliance on the phone, while not being able to come up with a new needle mover. To me, that's a CEO problem. While I believe that Cook was a near genius when it came to supply chain management, and more recently, financial engineering, he is not (IMO) a field general type. He's OK at implementing a strategy and direction that someone else has laid out. But he's allowed too many projects to flounder or die on the vine once a change of direction was needed on his watch. The AppleTV is not what it should/could be. The TV streaming service never got off the ground and is now dead, last I heard (relying on some sort of deal with Dish). The watch, Apple Pay, the Mac Pro, the iTunes restructure... they've all stumbled under Cook. As far as this car project, that scares me. That one REALLY scares me. That's about as far as Cook can get from his and Apple's core competence. I'd rather see them start building TVs and refrigerators. Much like racing, the way to make a small fortune in the automotive sector is to start with a large fortune.

I think the company is just fine. But I think they need a wartime consigliere right now, to borrow a line from The Godfather. Without that, I'm having a hard time seeing where the earnings growth is going to come from going forward, absent the iPhone.

Ya, why own a stock with an average analyst upgrade up 30% to $120/share. This in a stock that pays 2.5% dividend right now with a P/E around 10.4.

For some reason I just don't agree with you rocket.

well Apple P/E is irrelevant because they already said they're not growing this year, so unless the growth picks up or they buyback a hell of a lotta stock the P/E is of no consideration. Google P/E is over 20 but they're going to grow a lot next year, the year after, and the year after.

Jag...interesting take. You make great points. Do you see Ive being capable of providing what Cook lacks? Jobs was seemingly great at being a products guy. Cook is like Eisenhower whereas Jobs was Patton.

Stylistically, Ive's certainly got some visionary traits, doesn't he? I'm not trying to run Cook down, but he just hasn't shown that he's really got an eye for what constitutes a customer delighter.

Look at Jobs. He wasn't (truly) an engineer. But he had a good enough understanding of engineering principles from a high level, and he had this weird sense for making something a must have, that he could tell people what to do, as long as they knew how to do it. I continue to believe that there's as much brain horsepower in the ranks of Apple as any other tech company. But yeah, that's exactly it. Somewhere in the leadership mix, you need a Patton.

Yeah, I realize that people like that only come along maybe once in in a generation. But Cook needs to realize what he is and isn't good at and put the right people in certain key positions. Even on Apple forums, the current product mix is taking hits for being stale and uninspiring versus the competition. The potential is certainly there. And goodness knows, they've got the money!
