If people want to become addicted and kill themselves with cigs then let them do it. They are fine with big pharma producing insanely powerful opiates that are killing people left and right and turn a blind eye. Not to mention they have started to quietly back rec drug legalization.

Rant over

Agreed. My Altria stock down over 10% today. Wondering if I should buy more or hold and see how this plays out.

I am in the same boat.

Well after checking I am still above my cost avg on both MO and PM so it will have to drop some more before I buy.

If I was to invest in MO at this point, it's for when they finally officially get into weed. Cigs are dying (then again, people have been saying that for 30 years at least).

I don't know what the frick is going on, but the 22-26 age group (the law students and law clerks I interact with) are smoking with a vengeance. I'm curious (and slightly depressed) to see whether that trend continues.

I seriously don't understand that or people who try opiates. Prescription drugs are one thing but why the frick would you voluntarily try that shite or meth? People are tards.

The future in tobacco is overseas, not domestic. Places like China, India, Africa (hell, Europe still smokes a lot as well) are where you really need to watch policy and popularity trends going forward IMO.

With that being said, I'd be surprised if worldwide tobacco usage tailed off much in the near future.

Correct, I got in for the overseas markets and for when they get into the weed market. China and India alone smoke more than the rest of the world combined and the rate for each country is increasing.

The middle east has the highest smoker rates I have witnessed and I have been most everywhere, however as India and China contain almost half of the worlds population between them yours is likely a true statement.

Fun fact, they each have a much larger population than the entire Western hemisphere.

I absolutely think this will be happening. Kentucky and a few other tobacco state ag centers have been all over this stuff. I don't think it would be a hard transition at all for tobacco farmers to make, and many are looking for more profitable crops with the depression of tobacco prices.

The question is how long it takes to build the infrastructure to handle commercial production (warehouses for mass storage, processing plants, etc.).

If I were one of the tobacco majors I'd probably quietly go to my consistently best producers and have them grow a few plots on some different soils under myriad growing conditions, pick the best few, and then come into that area to build a plant/receiving station.

I am not sure they will go that route but it is very possible. I just dont know how well the traditional tobacco growing areas can grow high quality weed. I wouldn't be surprised if they wait and just buy established companies down the road who have already done all the leg work. There are already a couple of groups out west that have started buying campaigns trying to form some larger corps.
