I’ve been with my current employer for over 7 years now. I’m applying for a job that is asking for references. I can put my 2 of my superiors that have left the company, but neither managed directly in my current role.

The one person I would list for my current role I would not want to know I was looking until it was pretty much a done deal. It’s not so much him that I’m concerned about but more about anyone else in my office finding out. They likely would take it personal and fire me.

How would the MT handle?

I put references that aren't related to existing job. Unless the folks at the existing job know me well enough to not snitch or if the organization already knows.

You want a variation, not everyone from your latest gig

Keep 1-3 references that you always use. If you get DQd from a job because you don’t want someone at your current job to you are looking, you do not want that job because it’s run by idiots.

never give references from a current job if there is any threat of backlash due to this. use past references from elsewhere.

Neither have directly supervised me in my current role.
