The goal is a modest return (say around 3-4%), but the lowest amount of risk possible to achieve that.

Not sure. I see a stock bubble.

I'd divide it in 5 parts and diversify.

It's not going to net 3-4% but if this is just a park with minimal risk I'd recommend a CD. Since it's a very short-term 1-2 years there isn't much difference in return and there's almost no risk.

I'm more conservative so take my advice for what it is.

Find a bond that expires in one to two years yielding 3-4%.

How about a real response?

There are many municipal bonds that pay 5% TAX FREE that are very safe.

We are saving for a house and I'm on a 2-3 year plan. I put $150k in Vanguard Intermediate Term Corporate Bond Index Fund Admiral Shares. I'm hoping for a 3-4% return and much better than a savings account. Did I miss 15%+ growth in the S&P over the past 2 years, of course. But, it's there and I can plan on it when I'm ready to move it over for a down payment.

The stated interest rate may be 5% but the yield isn't unless of course that particular muni isn't really all that safe.

The current 30 year muni index yield is 3.36% according to Bloomberg. For an investment horizon of "one to two years" it's more like 1%.
