I have about $30k in my Roth and T-IRA accounts with EJ. I had my paperwork looked at by a financial advisor friend of mine here in Oxford, MS and he said that I was paying about 1.3% in fees after examination which he said was not bad and was surprised I had that with EJ. However, I feel like I have done enough homework and studying to leave EJ and move my money into Vanguard, save that 1%, and manage it on my own.

My question is how? What steps must I take now to assure a seamless transition from one institution to another?

Vanguard's website and customer service phone number will walk you through what you need to do. Basically, open an account, obtain account number, instruct EJ to close account and to send check to VG for deposit. They'll help you make sure it remains "roth" money. Good call!

remember loads (depending on share class you bought), with your annual fees, higher expense ratios, higher commissions, no online trading etc.

You SHOULD be saving more than that amount you posted by moving to Vanguard with no annual fees, no loads and cheap expense ratios and cheap commissions. wise decision. congrats!

I am surprised too, normally it's much worse than that. To be fair to EJ, small accounts do come with high fees.

But to answer your question, moving your account should be very easy, just talk with Vanguard, Schwab, etc.

Bump..

I'm not the OP but I finally made the transition from EJ to Vanguard. It was a transfer-in-kind, so now I have my shares of four different American Funds Class C mutual funds sitting in my Vanguard account. I want to exchange them all for a target date retirement fund for now (VFFVX).

For those who have made the switch, is it as simple as clicking "Exchange" on the balances and holdings page? Or do I need to click "sell" and buy the target date fund with cash? How long does the entire process take? Sorry for the basic questions.. first time doing this myself. TIA

Click on exchange. I use that when I need to rebalance my IRA with Vanguard. The transaction is done at the end of the business day using the closing prices for those funds on that day.
