Seattle area boasts an amazing 3.7 percent unemployment rate and a quick search of job search sites reveals thousands of professional openings. The new minimum wage might disrupt employment in the service sector, but salaries for professionals are soon to be pushed even higher. Blue state getting it done.

Correlation does not equal causation. That goes for any "side".

I'm trying to figure out how a raise in minimum wage effects professionals, who already make a lot more than minimum wage.

Just contrasting one sector vs. the other. Conventional wisdom predicts a reduction in the minimum wage job market while the the rest of the job market is on fire. Higher wages for most people may very well support higher product costs to support the increased minimum wage and there may be no long term contraction in the minimum wage job market...rising tide floats all boats.

I just got back today from a week in the area. Let's just say when dealing with any clerk, waiter, driver or other service person there I never mistook their work ethic or attitude for that of a Mississippian.

Maybe culturally in the NW they want to work?

Add that to the list of why the NW is such a desirable place to live. I have one daughter in college up there (all the rest went to LSU) and we own property N of Seattle. We hope to relocate in the next year or two.

I spent a week in the north Seattle area last summer and I've never seen a city in a boom quite like that in person.

I notice this in CO vs. the south. The people are friendly and helpful. You get your drones but they are a lot higher quality drones than in the south.

yet EVERY low end place by my house says now hiring. The signs list starting salaries, the lowest that posts is Sprouts whihc is offer 9.25 STARTING hrly wage. Amazing.

Very weird article. Top chart shouts "lowest unemployment in years!" First graf:
quote:

Eskinder Said graduated from Washington State University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in economics, a specialty in international economic development, and high hopes of getting a job within his field.

Four years and dozens of job applications later, he’s working part-time, driving a car for a town car and limo service.
