Update: I picked up a beater 5-speed 2001 Honda Civic for $1800. Has 160,000 miles, but good service history, new pads/rotors, and a new timing belt at 110,000. Has no AC, but Portland rarely gets above 85 in the summer, so it's really not a big deal. After an oil change and alignment/balance it's been doing just fine for a couple of weeks now. She's not a looker, but she'll do the trick (hopefully, anyway). I spent way less than I originally thought I would; I just really hate the idea of having two cars and couldn't get past spending more than I absolutely had to. Worst case scenario, the thing falls to shite and I part it out, learn my lesson, and buy something a bit nicer.
