Thoughts on Downpayment on Car, 0% Financing, Toyota Highlander, ETC.

So the wife wants either a new or slightly used Toyota Highlander. I have a few months so I start looking around. Well Toyota apparently offers 0% for 60 months with Tier 1 or better credit which I have. Well what good is a down payment other than lowering the monthly note since there's no interest? I sort of feel like I'm setting myself up for a trap walking in without financing ahead of time and trying to get it through the dealer. New to me as I own all my other cars and bought them from individuals.
Option B appears to be slightly used Highlanders of which there are plenty available based on what I see online. I think I've heard people say Lightstream is good right? Sub 2% sounds good to me at least.
Has anyone purchased a Highlander lately? I think I've heard people say they are hard to negotiate on due to people basically paying sticker. I wonder how much of that is truth and just people who haven't followed the Will Cover method appropriately?
Anyhow. Any thoughts or experience appreciated. Trying to uncover unknown unknowns as I try to figure out how to get the best deal on this car.

0% for 60 months is going on for 2016s until they are gone, I work at Toyota dealer. Would not wait for them to run out in months before taking advantage of it. I would buy new, get color and features you want, 2 years scheduled maintenance, and paying no interest is a huge plus (since 1st time had incentives on Highlanders since new body style came out)

I would put at least the sales tax down and enough that I'm not upside down from the get go, No gap insurance needed as well

Yep, as soon as you drive it off the lot, you're underwater. With the sales tax, you're paying for something that beings you no additional value.

Highlander is probably the best seller percentage wise YTD for Toyota . I see no negotiation in your future

We got a 2016 AWD limited platinum Highlander last December. I think we paid ~$47k with an interest rate of 1.89%. Put $5k down, will cost around $2300 in interest over 5 yrs. We got approved through pen fed for 1.99%, dealer could only go down to 1.89%, so we just took it. We love it.

What was the MSRP of the vehicle? Did you have much luck negotiating on it?

The 2 years thing is the toyotacare correct? I can't really wrap my head around pre-paying maintenance cost for oil changes, tire rotations, etc. Would just prefer to bring the car up to Diaz tire which is like a mile away.

It's been more than two years since I purchased my Toyota. I bought new because the price of the ones that were one or two years old was too high compared to the price of a new one. I was very surprised. Things may have changed since then. Buying new with 0% interest made the most sense to me. No regrets.
