Evidently the planner must use $2.75/gal gas

No joke... my fuel spendings each month were around that before I started carpooling...

IF you did that from age 18 to 68, assuming a lofty ROR of 8%, you would have just under $4,000,000 saved by retirement.

That's a really big if. Most people aren't saving for retirement at 18

And if they are, they probably can't afford to put 500 away a month

I don't think $500/month for retirement is anywhere close to enough.
For an older person obviously. For a youngin' that's a decent start.

My personal feeling is that we'll see true financial system armageddon before we see retirement, so all of our savings will be a waste of time.

Models and bottles baby.

What percentage of your gross income do you put in retirement?

If I count my kids 529 then about 24%.

$590 per month...$864 per month...$4,400 /month.

Is any of that gonna be worth much in say 2036 when I retire? I figured I'd need more than my current net income per month 24 years from now when I retire. Those don't come close.

I inflation adjusted those figures to be presented in todays dollars.

If unadjusted for inflation, the $590 figure would be $4,150 per month.

So if someone made 4400/month now they'd have to make 30800/month 24 years from now to stay the same?

Just thought I'd share this. Got it in a USAA magazine yesterday.

I honestly wonder if the person who made this budget allocation is some college kid who just arbitrarily made shite up

Away from my work compute with the model I drew up, but off hand: no. That's over the course of 50+ years.

For a more realistic projection, bringing ROR to 6%,

My dad is nearing retirement and all the guys he talks to want to use 4%, at 6% he'd be fine. Hell at 6% he would never touch principal.
