Vanguard. Index funds. Regular, automatic investments. You're welcome.

do you want to just go long? or short also? only stocks? stock options? Do you have any retirement accounts? 401k? TIRA? ROTH IRA? DO you have ETF's and/or mutual funds in these accounts?

I use Vanguard for my TIRA and ROTH IRA as well as ETF's and some stocks. I use TD ameritrade for trading futures.

Honestly, just sticking to this advice will save you a lot of headaches.

That may not be what the OP is looking for thus the need for him to answer the questions posed to give him better advice.

He may be looking for individual stocks.

If he can't figure where to buy stocks on his own, he probably doesn't have any business picking stocks. Yes, I know that's condescending as frick, but that doesn't make it any less true

the same could be said about picking a fund family for a retirement account. I don't see where he asked for advice on any funds. Which is why he needs to elaborate. Maybe his lack of elaboration reveals inexperience?

I have a 401k and a Roth. Was thinking more of a "buy low" stock plan and see if I can make a little money off it when it starts rising. I'm not really looking to trade around and chase stocks. I don't know much about stocks other than what I've been reading, just have a little extra money and would like to try investing in a stock or two.

Never tried Scottrade, but TD Ameritrade has higher trade fees ($10 for a one way trade). Most people see that and mark TD off of their list, but remember that you get what you pay for. TD will provide you with lots of information, and they have two great trading platforms in thinkorswim and Trade Architect. If you are new to stocks, just open a paper trading account to get a feel for things before risking real money.
