I did something stupid that didnt pay off and invested a small, but not insignificant amount in RSX after it crashed shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. I was winning big at the time and took a risk.

Well, Uncle Sam called my bluff and froze and delisted RSX, but my trading account still has my shares and a total that I invested showing in the account.

Is it gone or can I recover it somehow?

I know, I'm an idiot.

It’s a shame our tyrannical government doesn’t give us the freedom to invest how we wish. I would be buying hand over fist

I’ve got money in Russian oil stocks too as well as MBT. I’m just riding it out at this point.

It’s basically a placeholder to make sure you receive distributions to which you’re entitled.

It’s akin to holding stock or a bond in a company that’s gone bankrupt.

Sure but the fund has already sold things and distributed it. You should have received cash in the last 2 years.

Are you sure?

quote:

The Funds made an initial liquidating distribution to shareholders of a pro-rata share of current liquid assets, less a reserve to cover operating and liquidation expenses for an extended period. The initial distribution occurred on January 12, 2023. In addition, RSX made additional liquidating distributions on July 27, 2023 and September 29, 2023. The Funds may make additional liquidating distributions, although additional distributions may not occur.

Check your statements and activity around those dates.

I’ll check, but it’s still showing in my account as an etf I own.

You do still own the ETF as a placeholder if/when they pay out more distributions to existing shareholders.

The value you see is useless as it’s not traded anymore, but you still have a claim to any funds as the ETF is liquidated over time.
