Recent press for Bitcoin

I am not interested in discussing the volatility of bitcoin so much like in the NYT, I think that discussion is tired. But the article goes into the more "mainstream" interest in Bitcoin, or more truthfully, the technology and concept behind it. This follows recent articles in The Economist about the blockchain as a substitute for trust and other potentials.
I am curious about what other applications folks here think may be the future of such a technology - finance, automated business transactions, land registers or other industries that require strict ownership verification (luxury goods dealing maybe?)...
Napster was a first P2P technology that lost due to being first, but it paved the way for a lot of other successful business models. Is bitcoin the same?
