There have been two major GTL (20 billion each) facilities cancelled recently. Essentially converting natural gas to diesel. The ethane cracker projects are still being built. This turns ethane into ethylene, etc.

LNG (Cheniere) is still expanding with export plans.

Chevron is building a huge ethane unit in Baytown now. Pipeline co's like Kinder and Enterprise should do well if the market goes this way. Along with the ng gas producers like Encana.

But how does oil factor into this? The major operators and drilling companies will see a surge in profits at some point. Many of these have mid, shale, and refining assets. Service companies and drilling such as Transocean or Noble will benefit.

Which direction long term are we headed?

I've been doing alot of research being an outgoing geology grad student. In the last 10 years, nearly every major sans BP has increased gas production by over 10%. I only see this going up from here on out. Gas is easier to produce and demand is going to be going through the roof over the next decade. Environmental regulations are making it easier for natural gas plants over oil or coal too.

You can definitely see where its going with the majors constructing more LNG plants.
