In the context of the system, all is fair, he played by the rules and he profits. But it's just backward. That's all.

Surely he has contributed quite a bit to making Microsoft what it is today, so there is nothing "unjust" about him making a huge profit here. Actually, he has probably been holding his net worth down all these years himself, and likely could have much more today had he never become CEO.

Also, as you mentioned, this is just on paper, so what he does between now and when he actually retires, who his replacement is, and what role he plays in this process will all have a huge impact on his net worth.

So who's the next CEO that needs to step down? I'm thinking Tim Cook has gotten a lot of bad press lately.

That would be a good guess. Unfortunately they can't bring Jobs back again this time....

Honest Question: could either Ballmer or Tim Cook have truly succeeded at a level that made people forget about their predecessors?

Cook has confronted labor issues-which as supply chain guy he at least played a part in the creation of-as well as unravelling the rather difficult issues surrounding the company's biggest two employees IMO-Jony Ive and Scott Forstall-in a rather direct and decisive way.

Putting Jobs' fixer on the Maps issue in Eddy Cue and iTunes shows he's a pretty smart guy IMO.

I think their biggest problem has been sausage making as it relates to iradio and itv. The deal-making necessary to get the record companies and content providers/cable co's was something that Jobs would've truly excelled at. His connections and personal relationships that went away with his death obviously retarded Apple's potential to cut through negotiating BS.

I think the iwatch will be a bust, but the iTV will be a return to form. As will the next redesign of the iPhone.

iOS 7 will be cool, too.

But expecting the man that follows the icon to achieve or blaze trails in the same way the icon did? It's unrealistic...

I don't think the person really matters in getting a content deal. It's all about the benefits working out for the studios. With studios owning/partnership with channel providers it's a very tough sell.
