Never tried hypnosis, but flying can cause rather extreme anxiety (in myself included, I particularly remember one time seeing how far below me a particular cloud was and, no matter how interesting the conversation I was having was, I could not unfocus from how high I was off the ground). Anxiety for flying, in and of itself, is actually justification for the prescription of an anxiolytic.
Personally, I just spend a bit of time and money at the airport bar first.
I'm an unhappy flier, but I would never alter my awareness, either through alcohol or medication. If the shite hits the fan, I want to be aware and wide awake, and ready to hurdle the less-prepared.
For the same reason, I always wear long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes when I fly.

I take two 1mg Lorazepam when I get to the airport. I absolutely hate flying, but have had to the past year for work. Take some happy meds when you get to the airport. I don't even remember most of that day when you add in some beers at the airport.

Google fear of flying. A former pilot put together a 5 page document detailing how plans fly. Learn more about it to ease the fear. For instance that sinking feeling seconds after you taking off is because they raise the wheels up relieving drag so the plane is able to go faster. The sinking feeling is you adjusting to the planes speed. That's all.
Also planes almost fly with engines in idle. Once you get to the height the pilot is trying to reach you can feel him pull back on the throttle
To be honest it's not the plane that you need to be scared of it's the pilot. Once the planes are 2000 ft off the ground on take off and all the way till 2000 ft before they land, planes fly themselves.

I never would have guessed that so many others shared my fear of flying phobia. I avoid flying at all costs and luckily only have to fly for leisure travel. My fear increased as I got older. Last year I freaked out the night before a flight to the BVI's and had to cancel a 10 day vacation. I decided it was time to regain control of my fear.
Two commercial pilots here in Houston run a fear of flying workshop once a month at the Sugar Land airport. The workshop includes a presentation by a psychiatrist who deals with phobias along with the ability to be a pilot for an hour in the flight simulator. The workshop plus Lorazepam have worked wonders for me.
