My 17 year old daughter (no pics) lives in LA with her mom. I live in Texas. I bought her a car in February (2009 Hyundai Sonata). The only company I could find that would write her since I live out of state is Progressive for $1800 per 6 months. It's now time for renewal. Are there any insurance salesmen on here that can help? FWIW, the car is in my name but registered in LA under her address. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Could change the registration to TX and have a policy in TX. May save you a couple hundred.

I'd register it in TX. Would save you a ton of $.

If thats not an option, Geico has the best rates for young drivers (esp in LA). If the car is registered in LA, I don't see why insurance companies wouldn't write her a policy.

Is this even an option? Would she get in trouble if she ever got pulled over? Her driver's license would be in LA.

Also, would a company write me here if the car will be housed in LA?

Sorry, if these questions are common knowledge.

No. My gf has out of state plates and car is in her dads name but her DL is here in LA. And they carry State Farm back where she's from.

Should I contact Geico directly? I contacted two different companies that shop a bunch of different companies and $1800 was the best offer. The best one of the companies could do was $5310 every six months!

Have her and her mother get on the same insurance policy. Pay her mother directly for her portion.
You'll get the valued "multicar" discount.

You will not be able to have a car registered in LA with TX insurance.

It's not that simple dummy

If she gets in an accident and they realize she doesn't live in Texas they may void the coverage.

That's a damn shame. You could buy a used car every 6 months! Does she have anything on her driving record that would be driving her coverage up so high?

Nope! She just started driving in February. Nothing on her record and 3.9 GPA.

It's an interesting age for some domicillary tug-of-war. You'd save a fortune getting her car registered in TX and getting her a TX drivers license. BUT would that have a factor on in-state tuition when (if?) she goes to college? Could she claim to be a Texas resident and go to college cheap over there?

My Louisiana friends who have property in neighboring states register their cars there. That's all I can say.

Probably not.

$300/month insurance
Gas, repairs etc...
Cost of car

At some point it hardly seems worth a 17 year old having the car
