Bitcoin is essentially just a large public ledger. We call it the "blockchain."

This ledger tracks all transactions. In essence, there really are no "bitcoins" per se, just entries in the ledger stating who has what.

Cryptography is used to ensure that only authorized people can modify the ledger. In other words, if the ledger says I have 5 bitcoins, then only I should be able to send those bitcoins to anyone else.

This is where the private key and public keys come into play.

Each public key (aka a bitcoin address) is actually a just the result of a mathematical function being performed on the private key. The math works such that it is a trivial task to go from private key to public key, however, it is EXTREMELY difficult, practically impossible to go from public key to private key. We're talking billions upon billions of years of non-stop computer power to crack a private key.

Bitcoins are sent to public keys by using the private key to "digitally sign" a message stating that x amount of bitcoins is sent to abc address.. But in order to send them, it requires knowledge of the private key.

Does that clear anything up?

I can't believe Pug boy is still comparing bitcoin to beanie babies. Does he understand anything about Computer Science?

What precisely does that have to do with the notion that bitcoin may be a similar speculative investment bubble?

I suppose there may be good arguments that it's not (although, I'm not sure I've seen them -- in fairness, I don't follow this stuff too much). I just don't get what that would have to do with such a notion AT ALL.

ANARCHY!!!!!!!

Also I'm a bit disturbed that bitcoin requires no working knowledge of monetary policy. Just requires computer science. Yikes.

Pretty sure you are. I have no idea what it means though. Probably because I don't know computer science.

If you ship usps and pay bitcoin, that package is pretty much guaranteed to be flagged, and also gives the gov't a physical address.

Doesn't that sorta defeat the purpose?

now, in addition to booking flights, you can also book hotels: CheapAir.com adopts Bitcoins to book hotels

btw, am I the only one here (besides Josh) who actually follows the bitcoin news daily and observes the daily growth of the currency before opining on it on this board?

I don't know where this idea that bitcoin's purpose is anonymity came from. That's not the case.

Anonymity is possible with bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, but it is not the default state. Anonymity will also get easier in the near future with things like Dark Wallet and ZeroCoin being released, but again, that's not bitcoin's purpose.

Pseudonymity (which is the default) is sufficient for most people.
