Is it possible to take IRA and invest in a private company without paying tax penalties. Basically a private equity.

I would like to leave the money in the IRA but have the IRA own my shares in a certain private company.

Possibly. Look into self directed IRAs

Look up Pensco Trust company. They're a trustee that will hold alternative investments.

This kind of setup is how rich guys like Mitt Romney and tech investors have $100 million+ IRAs, because they own assets of the companies they run in their own IRAs.
