My wife went to her credit union this morning to get approval for a car loan. They pulled her Experian report and it shows no less than 12 accounts that are not hers, they are her mother's. When we bought a car back in September, these accounts were NOT on her credit report.

Because of these accounts, my wife cannot get approved (at a decent interest rate) for a loan.

Does anyone know a quick way to get this cleared up?

Are they new accounts?

Do her and her mother have similar names?

She will have to contest with the credit reporting agency.

See if her credit union can help and/if they have a rapid rescore program.

No, but some are still open accounts.

Yes, they have the same first name.

Thanks for the advice.

I thought about that, but most of the accounts are old and they have never popped up on my wife's credit report in the past. Don't know why they are showing up now.

Did she ever have a credit card on her mom's account? That can cause the reports to be conflated. My sister had that happen once. Only one account, but my dad's credit card showed up on her report because she was a secondary user.

Is it possible to ask them to pull from another credit agency, like transunion? If the accounts don't show there, would they accept your explanation? Just a thought.

You can challenge the incorrect information. Write Experian and let them know the information you consider to be incorrect and that you want to dispute it. It has to be in writing. Also contact the creditors, again in writing and let them know of the error. If they refuse to correct the mistakes then go see an attorney who specializes in Fair Credit Reporting Act violations. The FCRA provides for the award of attorney fees so it usually is not to hard to find an attorney willing to take the case.

We did just that today. Experian cleared it all up and her Mom's accounts should be off her credit report tomorrow morning. I still in shock that Experian fixed it so quickly. Thanks for everyone's advice.
