Ideas to make some side money around the house...?

Any ideas on how I can make an extra $500-$1000/month working around the house? I am reasonably computer proficient and also a pretty good carpenter. My schedule doesn't allow for a side job cutting grass or doing handiwork away from home.

I'm thinking I could make some money building basic cypress furniture (swings, tables, chairs, Adirondacks) but I have no idea how to market these types of things.

Thoughts?

How much time are we talking about here?

If you're going to start making and selling furniture, you're going to have to provide a good bit of cost upfront. You'll need a work area, materials, and a way of advertising.

I'm talking about basic outdoor furniture. I have a shop and all the tools that would be required. Once a pattern is established, time to build wouldn't be that bad.

I just don't know how to market this type of stuff other than weekend craft shows and putting it in my front yard for people to see (both of which are out of the question). The key would be to get hooked up with a nursery or store that sells that type of stuff.

People do it on etsy all the time.

I'd be all about etsy and starting some sort of etsy company. My wife is always buying stuff from there or showing me stuff that we could make.

The issues with etsy and furniture is its not exactly easy to ship furniture.

Advertise locally via craigslist, classified ads, etc, then maybe do a weekend show every now and then when you have time

Furniture is an awesome idea. There is a very successful company around us that builds pretty basic, rustic style stuff with basically 2x's. Looks really good, but their cost in materials per piece is not much at all. As long as you have the time...

I made these for my wife. It was easy and people wanted to know where I bought them from. Apparently planters are fairly expensive.

Flea markets, farmers markets, craigslist, Facebook, and word of mouth.

The easiest way to come up with $500/month is to cut expenses.

Check in with a pool supplies, consignment and/or furniture stores as well. Every now and again I'll check those for outside furniture or wood Adirondack chairs for a decent price.

Make sports themed Adirondack type furniture, its the trend here at the beach right now...esp. Bama and FSU stuff.

Etsy, Ebay and Craigslist. You'll get some pretty good business there...

Advertise locally via craigslist,

This is a great, FREE way to market yourself and your products once you have a working model. You can literally make new posts and/or renew your prior postings every couple days for people to see. I'm sure you'd get lots of responses because people troll Craigslist constantly for things like that.

Facebook has all kinds of online yard sale pages for every area of the country. I'd start there

This.

Wife has a side business pretty much through Facebook. Between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the like there's plenty of business out there. Word will spread as long as quality is there.

I'm not sure I would do the sports themed furniture......seems like a good way to get slapped with a lawsuit if you come up with anything even close to an official logo. You may get away with a color scheme, but I think even that could be dicey.

My teenage son (HS Sr) operates his own fresh vegetable farm (wholesale/retail) w/delivery. He's averaged 1,200 a week since 1st of June . It's seasonal but has been rewarding for him.
