Frequent Flyers I have a question

I am planning a trip to Italy next summer using American Airlines miles. I am looking at doing Business class, but the only award flights for business class are very long travel times. The economy award flights are much better so here is my question. Can i book an economy award ticket and then upgrade to business class using miles after I book the ticket for the long flight segment?
