Financial Statements/ Refusal to submit

Gents - hoping some of you here might be able to provide some insight for me.
One of our overseas customers who we have been doing business with for 3-4 years got themselves in a bit of a pickle with corruption and fraud so now (unfortunately) all of their vendors have been requested to pretty much submit even their blood type.
They have requested our financial statements and this is not something we want to do due to privacy concerns as well as being a small private company.
According to our agent, many uber large companies have also refused to submit their financial statements; however, could anyone shed some light and/or ideas concerning how to phrase it in an official letter?
Any help would be appreciated

In my opinion, if this situation were presented to me I'd tell whoever is requesting the information that you would verify services performed for the company, but that you aren't inclined to provide them with proprietary information in which they have legal entitlement to and doesn't pertain to the scope of their investigation.

Thanks for your input SE.
We're just trying to properly phrase a refusal is all. It's stupid too b/c we've already been doing business with them for 3+ years.
The problem arose because one of their other vendors was a limo company based out of some dude's house.......we're in O&G so naturally there would be an issue. I think kickbacks were a problem with that limo company and they got busted b/c a shitload of people got fired.
