How do you take possession of it? Can't really ship door to door, too much value. Do they ship to your bank via a secure carrier?

I doubt anyone asking for advice on buying gold here is buying it in amounts that it is heavy as shite
Maybe silver though.

They just mail it to you and you have to sign for it in my experience.

As far as best place to buy at spot, there is a site that shows the different live rates for different things at the different dealers. I can't remember it or I'd have posted it.

Depending on what you are getting it is cheaper to get it from a different country. At one point the cheapest place I could find gold eagles from was either Britain or Germany. But that was a couple years ago.

For silver and gold eagles and such, I've found the prices at a couple of shops up here are as good or better than online. Save on shipping too.

But Louisiana now has a 3 percent sales tax on metals and numismatics. There was an effort to get rid of it in the last session, but I'm not sure what happened. One guy told me it is phasing out, but that could be BS.

If I were making s big buy, that tax would drive me online or across the state lines to a shop in a state that does not charge sales tax. It varies around the country.

Also worth mentioning is Utah has a gold bank now. You can buy gold and use a gold link debit card. Maybe you need to go there and see them for yourself though. Oklahoma also allows gold and silver to be used as currency so maybe they have something there too.

I don't know if I could trust someone so far away with my gold

The United Precious Metals Association was established shortly after the passage of the Utah Specie Legal Tender Act in early 2011. UPMA is known as a gold & silver depository. We offer Americans a choice in the type of currency that they use by offering accounts denominated in U.S. minted gold, and silver dollars. Members benefit from 0% buy/sell spreads and low vaulting costs. Members may even transact with each other using gold or silver dollars within our closed-loop payment system. To open an account and become a member, sign up today on our homepage.

Members can access their wealth by using a Visa debit card, ACH (electronic check), or by taking physical possession of their holdings. The average account only costs a few bucks a month, this makes UPMA a very affordable place to save and transact with sound money.
