This.

Same as a savings acct except you can invest the money into low risk mutual funds or the like. Gains on it are tax free if you make qualified withdrawals later in life. Plus you can withdraw the contribution portion at any time, tax and penalty free.

It's essentially a savings account with options to invest.

Only downside I see, is that it is not readily as liquid as a savings account.

yes any MMF. mine with vanguard pays over 5% right now.

I use a mix of high yield savings, ibonds, money market, and VTSAX. I figure anything outside of retirement accounts qualifies as an emergency fund.
