Just graduated LSU in May and have been looking for a job all summer. Have a BA in Sociology and was hoping to get into criminal justice or human resourcing. Maybe population data.

Anyone with any advice on a fresh out of college outlook to start your new career? Much appreciated.

What do you really want to do?

Criminal Justice or HR?

My heart has always been with CJ but it just seems I'm getting shot down every time I apply for a position, even going as far out as places like the FBI HQ in DC. I have experience working with programs such as DHS but I think because I'm 22 and fresh out of college they overlook that.

have you been working during college? if so, for how long?

long work experience + degree = more chances after graduating

Worked since I was 16, and maintained a job throughout my 4 years at LSU. My resume is strong, which is why idk why I'm not hearing anything back.

Use every single resource available to you. Network, make connections, leverage family relationships, reach out to LSU career services, monster.com, etc. If you're just dropping your resume on organizations' websites, you're not going to have a ton of luck, those things are black holes.

LSU has a vast amount of people in Emergency Preparedness school/training stuff. Why not sit in on a few classes over there. Seriously, just audit them for no credit or just sit in-gulp-without paying.

Be attentive. Seriously. Network with your classmates and find out if any of them are in law enforcement.

Better yet, talk to your instructors...see if they can give you a leg up.

Last but not least: Contact your State Senator & State Representative. Be really sweet & funny to their Legislative Aides on the phone. Be affable and tell them what you want and are after. Ask them for your Legislator's help in finding a job or getting a letter of recommendation.

I did that in college and found a slew of really cool student jobs working for the State each semester.

Just some suggestions. Take 'em FWIW.

As mentioned above, Networking probably lands +70% of jobs. Either use your connections to connect you to someone else, or make your own connection with a target company employee. I'd suggest trying to get a brief face/phone time with a potential company.

Also, the more you "do" the better. For a young grad, things such as Leadership experience and Community involvement don't hurt when the recruiters want to know what type of individual they will be investing in. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Internships are never a bad option.... You want to show you have not been just sitting around

Hangout with Swifty when he hits on other guys women in bars and they try and fight him. Seriously that's how I met the connection for my first job was through one of his scuffles.

For the record I didn't hit on her... I told her that the tat on her shoulder was stupid... anyway true story. I get punched in the face and dickless gets a job...

ETA: I guess this falls under "networking"
