Any LA Elderly Law/Medicaid Specialists Here?

My MIL and her sister own a house together- sister used to live there full time, MIL lives in a separate house (for now). Sister is in a nursing home and on Medicaid. We (my wife and I) have been covering the bills on the home since Medicare ran out a couple of months ago. I know that if/when we sell the house, Medicaid is entitled to recover costs from the proceeds from the sale of the house, but what I'm trying to find out is if we can deduct any debts owed before we pay Medicaid back? Can I make a claim first on what is owed before Medicaid takes their share?
Should I be keeping track of our expenses for reimbursement?

I'm not sure but,

Yes. I'm not sure I would even pay another dime for a house that no one is living in.

The plan is for MIL to sell her house and move into sister's house, but MIL has to get her house cleaned out and ready to sell, and she can't float both payments.
