Would the CWS gain in stature if it moved?

Not for us as die-hard fans, but the the CWS doesn't enjoy the status and excitement that the football championship brings, or the basketball championship, for that matter. Why is that?
I think it being in Geauxmaha has alot to do with it. IOmaha is a small town (relatively speaking) and doesn't have the bright lights/big city appeal of a New York, LA, etc..
If the championship moved to a major metro market, would it start to gain more exposure and hence, build awareness and excitement? It just comes across, nationally, as an A ball championship and not a major event with basically a "who cares?", "ho-hum", attitude among a wide spectrum of sports fans.

no.
the main thing holding it back is ESPN or other major network coverage of the regular season.

Its a regional sport. Blame the Northerners for their late seasons, shitty weather and whining bias. They simply do not care about it up North like the South. Course they care about pro, just not college.
I mean, when a school like OSU puts up that kind of effort against FSU, guess I'd be whining bias or just not care about the sport either.

no, college baseball is just not popular. Therefore, the championship series will not be as popular as say the very popular sports like football and basketball.

Being in Omaha actually helps it in my opinion. No national tv exposure during the season and the fact the players don't jump directly from college into the big leagues are both more of an issue. That and the fact that it seems like schools in the larger metro areas (pro sports towns) don't seem to draw much.

but don't you think the small town feel of an "event" in Geauxmaha perpetuates the small appeal of the event?

there is no shortage of people or excitement in the city of Omaha when the CWS is taking place, i can tell you that
Posted on 6/27/09 at 12:58 pm to Proejo
I think it would lose appeal due to the loss of the mystique that Omaha has.

Omaha isn't the problem (if it's a problem). One problem is that the Northeast and Midwest can't really get into it because they generally can't field decent teams because of weather issues. If the season started a month later, nation-wide interest in the sport would increase. Having the Big Ten and Big East more involved would increase national exposure. Not saying whether or not they should delay the start of the season; just presenting that hypothetical.

no, not at all. Again, it's the lack of major network coverage of the rest of the season holding back the CWS.
Augusta, GA is a small town and the small town feel is even promoted....and the Masters does just fine. Same with other major golf tourneys. Difference? Golf is on national TV/Espn all year.

Not really. Although I've never been, it seems like the whole town gets behind it. Stick the thing in LA, and nobody there would give a crap, plus say it was in Dodger Stadium, exactly how much tv excitement would it generate seeing 10,000 - 15,000 people and 40,000 empty seats? Plus Omaha is a fairly central location, so it would seem that would make it better for the actual fans to travel to.

ESPN has shown regular season games in the past and people just don't watch. It's not on TV because there isn't a demand, not the other way around.

you don't think that ESPN creates demand by airing shows, then covering it on Sportscenter, hyping it with goofy ads, etc? they do. Women's basketball, poker, spelling bee, etc are prime examples.

No, barely anybody watches those things.

So you are saying more people would watch "the world's strongest man" competition than college baseball? Sorry but I don't buy it. I'll grant you it is a regional sport, but the coverage by ESPN sucks for most of the year. I say FOX should get the CWS. They have regional networks that can (and do) carry college baseball. ESPN, not Omaha, is the problem.

No, I'm saying there probably isn't a big difference in ratings but it might be more expensive for ESPN to cover college baseball than to film one strongman event or poker tournament and show it over and over again. If there was money to be made off showing college baseball than ESPN would do it, they're a business, it's not like they just have a natural hatred for certain sports (or universities).

Maybe a travelling tour set up across the country to limit expenses. Maybe along the I-10 corridor from LA to Jacsonville. There is money to be made, just not tons. Does it justify coverage, they don't believe so... but I doubt it is something ESPN has thouroughly explored. Advertisers are where the cash is at and I am sure the spots for sale during a world's strongest man competiton (re-run!) is relatively cheap. Look, if ESPN can set up shop to cover some mid major basketball programs that won't do shite for ratings, it can cover a major college baseball game. UF/Fla State, Rice/Texas, LSU/Illinois, etc. were some good ones to cover this past season, not to mention key conference games. The excuses are as flimsy as their effort.

The CWS has outgrown Omaha, IMO. It does not have the proper infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, available commercial airline flights, rental cars) to support the number of people coming into the city from out of town. Also, as we saw this CWS, the venue needs to have a domed stadium or at least a retractable roof. The NCAA made a mistake giving a 25 year contract guarantee to the city, IMO.
