I understand that you can always make lemonade out of lemons and learn from a loss. As Bill Arnspargar used to say, "Its better to learn from a win."

Simple-minded? I'll take year after year of no losses and championships-- you'll hope for losses, for the "long-term" benefit-- let's see whose program is most successful.

I was responding a post that said it's NEVER good to lose.

Of course, that's wrong. There are several situations where a loss is good.

Obviously, the first one is the situation closest to us. After we lost to Wisconsin and had lackluster performances against Jax State and Auburn, it was clear that Les wasn't going to right the ship. So a loss to Auburn was GOOD, because it got Les fired more quickly so we could start turning the program around. And O has done a great job as interim HC.

Also, in basketball, when a really good team is on a long winning streak, they start to feel full of themselves and often start playing with less focus and intensity, but still winning. Oftentimes, a loss is GOOD because it allows the coach to re-focus the team. Again, short-term pain for long-term gain.

Same with the CEO of a company. If he's not really the right guy for the job but the company is doing ok, the guy may keep his job. But if they have a bad quarter or two, maybe he'll get fired and the company can replace him with a better CEO who can lead the company to greater heights. Much the same as a football coach.

So that's what I meant when I said a loss can be good.

I understand that you can turn a loss into a positive-- lemonade out of lemons-- And you are glad LSU lost to wis and aub-- I, on the other hand would rather be undefeated.

In your example of a basketball team on a long winning streak and getting full of themselves-- what is better (1) a loss in which they learn they need to be back on track or (2) a win, albeit close, which they learn the same thing. All things being equal, winning is always better than losing-- at least it is if you are a winner.
