First off going to the game and being a lifelong LSU supporter I truly hate losing to Tulane in any sport but last night I thought was successful to some degree.

For the first time I saw defensive intensity in 3 years, Wade was constantly telling his guys to pick up earlier on the defensive end and guard 4-5 feet outside of the 3pt line. Even though we out-rebounded the Wave it hurt having basically only one post player in the game at any point.

Positives
Reath has gotten better than last year and showed nice touch around the basket and the offense when it went through him actually had motion and off the ball action. Previously in CJJ it was dump it in stand and watch. He also attacks the rebounds much like he did last year, but one thing I really liked was how fast they try and get the outlet passes up the lanes and into their offense.

As already mentioned the defensive intensity was much improved, meaning not only was there a pulse on defense but they actually did a good job on fundamental rotations but there were times and you could tell with guys playing out of position like Sims and Rachal.

Young guys got some minutes and our Tigers never quit, which if you have been watching the last couple of years they have in some games. LSU went 4-24 from 3pt range and still were in the game.

Biggest positive though by far of the night was rebounding, we won the battle of the boards 38-28 and held Tulane to only 3 offensive rebounds. With only one post player playing at one time, the guys did a great job boxing out. Both Reath and Sims had double doubles.

Negatives
It seems like Combs will be able to go for the game against Alcorn and Epps' injury does not sound too serious. But Kiir while very athletic and long is not strong enough yet and very prone to fouls. He should be a very nice piece in 2 years as a junior because he plays with high energy and is a terror already on the offensive glass just is not ready just yet. It was only Tulane but defensively they were able to get to the middle way too often mostly due to a lack of strength.

Shooting - Could have just been an off night but certain guys looked really bad shooting the ball, Sims did not look good at all when he shot even though he made a 3, and Sampson still shot way too early in the shot clock at times and put up some contested shots you could see Wade trying to teach.

Playmaking - Mays was probably our best playmaker and no offense to Skylar that is not the best thing. (Shoutout to him for a 4.12 in Pre-Med!) He made nice moves on the break but I honestly expected more out of Onwuasor, he was out of shape and at the 13:00 minute mark in the first half was gassed, now it could be that Wade just wants so much on the defensive end as he played very hard but he is build like a fullback. The transfers/new guys really struggled shooting need Onwuasor, Edwards, and Waters to add more on the offensive end if we are going to surprise some people.

Reid and Days will immediately help this team next year. All in all refreshing changes this rebuild will take time. Guys like Edwards, Onwuasor, and Combs while all good players are band-aids for this year. We are not a very athletic team, and there is not any one thing you can point to we do really well but defensively we are improving.

Also think we should play Tulane every single year, not a bad environment and it was fun for everyone. It should be alternating every year at campus sites only no SKC.

If it was not for Halloween think there would have been a capacity crowd. Fogelman is very small but it is not a bad arena. With the recent renovations (Now Devlin Fieldhouse) the lobby areas, bathrooms and above seating walkways are some of the nicest on campus ammenities I have seen in a long time. It cannot seat more than 4,000 but it was probably 2600-2900 strong, good atmosphere and there were actually a lot of NOLA sports figures in attendance whether it be a couple Saints players, John Brady, or former Tulane football and basketball players.

Agree 100%, also one thing to note, and I did not know this until I looked up in the AAC banners, but Wichita State is now a full member of the AAC, which is good for the conference and Tulane as a whole. There really is not a bad seat in Fogelman because it is so small so right there that is 5 pretty good homes games in Memphis, Houston, UConn, Cincy, and now Wichita State. If LSU and Tulane opened play every year your right it could generate much needed supoort, there was a large contingency of LSU people there, and there RPI should be improved.

Great summary and synopsis. I appreciate your time and attention to detail. It helps us out of town guys follow more than just a box score.

Thanks bud!

It was a horrendous shooting night that you will rarely see again. The injuries concern me more than anything. There is no margin for error and if you don't have a full roster it's even worse.

No reason not to play home and home with Tulane in hoops, could be a nice little rivalry to generate some fan interest since the non conf schedule is usually pretty watered down to begin with and LSU has struggled putting fans in the seats during Nov and Dec.

The SEC is going to be some tough sledding because there is a lot more depth to the league. You have a couple programs that have had time to improve their rosters.

It will be a miracle if this team makes NIT, but the studs will be here next year and at least we will see some coaching on the sidelines.

Good stuff.

Sims, Reath and Mays were our entire team basically last night. Sampson played pretty poorly, have got to get him to play at a consistently good level for us to be a decent team.

Waters was arguably the worst player on the floor, he may have a ways to go. So much talent there, but in a very small package.

Bottom line - we missed Epps and Combs BADLY last night. Sims, at 6'5, had to lock down the PF position most of the evening. Kiir gave Reath a little breather but Sims and Rachal had to try and lock down PF last night.

This team will improve its long range shooting and defensive intensity. That is indeed a positive about the rebounding.

I hope Waters was not overhyped, and it will be disappointing if he does not show improvement.

Just hope the Tigers can get the physical play inside that they need to be much more competitive than last season.

Nice reporting. Very little in long range view should be gleaned from one game. We don't know what Wade was looking for beyond a win so decision making may have been different in a regular season game. This team will look decidedly different when Epps and Combs are back on the court. The shooting will improve once the offense is fully implemented and they can develop it in game situations.

The shooters may have been pressing a little in effort to impress the new coaches in their first game out. This team can be a tournament contender once a full rotation is set and they all know their roles.

This process will take time (year or two) , it just won't be fixed over night.

We rebounded well but we need to make sure we improve our free throw and 3 point shooting

We need work defensively but the effort seemed to be there.

Keep your chin up and work hard, good stuff will eventually happen

Agree again, Combs looked more 6'5-6'6 than a legit 6'7 but looked pretty strong, I hope its not a nagging injury because we need a brusier for SEC play, Kiir is not ready and Epps is not a true post. Though I know CWW will do good things with a stretch 4 and it should immediately hope our 3pt woes. I said it my write up the matchup to watch would be Epps versus Reynolds, that was before I knew Epps would be out. LSU just could not matchup with him.

I agree I do not see this team making the NIT simply because of frontcourt depth, I could see us losing some games early in the year we are not supposed to, but could very much see us taking a few in SEC play we are not supposed to win. I think the high 60's are a good pace/number for us to be at to be our most competitive. I do not think we will outscore many people, but teams always take on the attitude of there head coach if we can rebound and defend and grind out every game we will grow, if guys force up shots they will sit.

Greg Heiar takes no shite haha, neither does Will Wade but it was just nice to see they took guys out and you could see they were teaching.

First college game, and too many times he left his feet to make passes but you can tell the vision and toughness is there. I am sure and I know you are not saying it, but people will say why give a guy that 5'11 on a good day a scholly, he actually did a really nice job defensively, stats wont show tipped passes and obviously it isnt that hard for him to get low but he probably outside of Mays was out best defender at sitting down in a stance and putting a hand out to contest a dribble.

He struggled shooting but had good form, I really think the shooting was opening night woes coupled with so many new guys. Edwards has a nice stroke but Wade was rotating guys in and out trying to teach. Which it was an exhibition you could tell Dunleavy was playing it like a truly normal game, and thats okay. But Wade let certain guys play even let a walk on play meaningful minutes, and had a short leash because again they really were teaching.

Teaching is an important aspect of coaching. Anyone can dictate instructions, but delivering them in a manner in which the message sticks is a unique quality. I remember Payton talking about that when he took the Saints job.

Thanks for the report. This is a different type of exhibition than we are used to playing. Back when we regularly played exhibitions it was against teams that were put together from former college players and made the circuit or it was against smaller division 2/3 or naia type schools. This was against a legitimate team. I say that to say: the loss doesn’t bother me too much. I’m sure the team is not happy and Coach Wade would have liked to come away with the W. But it doesn’t count for anything and I’m sure Wade had other more pressing priorities than the final score of the game.

These exhibitions are an opportunity for the coach to experiment in a Live game with player combinations, installing new plays, etc.

As for Samson and Sims- not worried yet about their shooting. Both have already shown in he past that they can be good shooters. I trust the staff to get them on the position to be successful.

I can’t wait until next Friday to see them in person myself!

Was a decent crowd. Halloween in New Orleans definitely took away from it.

What a cool arena, great atmosphere. Little concerning giving up 84 to Tulane but no fear WW has had only two weeks to get his defense in. Definitely more energy for the team, Sampson has to step up and want to be the man, he seemed to be lost. Mayes and Duop definitely our best players last night. Won the board battle and blocked a few shots. Sims played well also, very impressed by the transition these kids bodies looked last night, they have grown up for sure. Waters, Onwuasor were disappointing and may have been pressing alittle bit. Brandon Rachal tons of upside and athletic.
Definitely missed Epps, missed a lot of point blank shots at the goal on offensive rebounds which was also nice to see. Tulane will probably not get that type of crowd all year and they played like it was there super bowl. In there defense they do have a couple of really good players. All in All we have a lot to look forward to and it was nice to see lots of coaching going on the entire game. We will take our lumps this year win and lose some we shouldn't, but still should win 15 games. Heiar, Armstrong definitely have WW's ear which was also nice to see the Head Coach discussing things with his assistants.
