The storm should be well past and Gainesville is looking like it will just see TS weather on Fri.

Cat 5 hurricanes that come to mind... Andrew, Camille ... Rita and Katrina were Cat 5, at least for a short time.

Conditions are right for #Matthew to continue to intensify prior to landfall. Possibily exists for CAT 5 on east coast in less than 12 hrs

Still no guarantee there will be electricity, emergency personnel, first responders, staff, or ya know that our team survives going and staying in florida.

Because of the aftermath and resources a game requires. Have you ever been through a Cat 4 baw?

Good thing for this thread. Nobody has thought about this yet in the 500 other threads.

Either the trolling is that poor, or some folks legitimately think this is just a minor storm and things will go back to normal once it passes.

Have you ever been thru a hurricane?

Because it sounds like you've never been thru a hurricane.

The ignorance of hurricanes, the difficult conditions they leave in their wake, and their inherent unpredictability astonishes me on a south Louisiana message board...

Why didn't the Saints play any home games in the NOLA in 2005? Katrina was long past.

Yes I have. Gainesville isn't on the coast. The models I have seen show it probably receiving TS type winds on Fri.

Isnt there some thing with the TV deals that prevents college games from being on Sundays?

Is Gainesville below sea level protected by an intricate levee system? NO would not have had nearly the damage if the levee system doesn't fail.

It has nothing to do with the storm itself. It's the aftermath. Logistics, damage, security resources that are needed elsewhere. It's just not feasible that soon.

Same year as Katrina, TS Cindy went right over NO. I went to work the next day as did the majority of the city. Gainesville is on the west side of the storm which is the better side to be on.

It just amusing to me bc I would bet if the tables were turned, the vast # of LSU fans would want LSU to do what UF is doing.

For the 1000th time the issue is not the weather in Gainesville, although, as someone else pointed out, they could have sustained winds as high as 70 mph. Those can be quite damaging and knock out power on a large scale.

The issue is that the resources and manpower needed to run a game will be needed elsewhere. Gainseville is less than 70 miles from the coast --- where winds may be as high as 160 miles an hour. There will be flooding. Buildings will be demolished. People will be missing. Electricity will be out for large parts of Florida. Roads may even be torn up and impassable. Police are needed there, not at a football game.

I am not sure why people in Louisiana, who have been through hurricanes, cannot figure this out.

I don't know about you or anyone else here, but if there was a 160 mph storm bearing down upon the coast of Louisiana, a fricking football game would be the last thing on my mind.

so Gainesville will be supplying the coastal cities with their law enforcement, first responders and other assets to assist?

I would think the coastal cities, state troopers, and national guard should have that covered.
