This is something I've been wondering for a while. So even though he starts for lsu, an sec school, he apparently still isn't one. So I ask: what is an sec caliber quarterback anyway? And is it really fair to compare him to the likes of Flynn, Tebow, manning, etc.?

ETA: The qb's i listed are the ones I hear most about. If it helps, the reason why i mentioned flynn is because he's not as amazing as the other two, but is still apparently somewhat of a gold standard.

IMO, i wasn't too impressed with any SEC QB this year. Yes, Jefferson needs improvement, but the kid played well in my opinion.

He did just fine in his first full season of play. He improved from the first game to the last, played a key role in a couple of big wins, and seemed to grow more comfortable with the game at the SEC level as the season wore on. Maybe he won't ever win a Heisman, but he's good enough to help us compete for the SEC West title—and that's what matters.

And next season will be his second Redshirt freshman year. Things are looking up! If he is as good of a qb as he is in school, we will be able to see him at LSU at least until 2016.

What does he lack, in your personal opinion?

He has the skills to be an all SEC type of QB. Just doesn't have the training, teaching, football knowledge.

I think you are probably wrong. Flynn was a 5th year senior when he hit the field. Rohan Davey was ineffective until he was a 5th year senior. McElroy was a 4th year junior when he got the ball this year. JJ got thrown into the SEC too soon, and I think will have a good junior year. However, Garrett could be an all-American.

What do you base this statement on?

I think, like another poster stated, that he got thrown into a high level conference too soon..Which is why I think Les hiring a qb coach would be one of the best decisions he's ever made.

Agree. Why don't more people see this? Rohan was horrible his 1st 2 years here. Flynn was not very good when he played early in his career. J. Russell was not that good early on. To top it off...JJ was better than all of these guys in their second year in the program.

Wrong. JJ's stats were decent, his ability to move the team was awful. The thing that kept him from throwing many INT's also kept him from moving the team. JJ was good for a couple of drives a game.

At the end of the season, JJ had 15 starts. Quite a bit. He was better vs Washington than he was Arkansas.

Arkansas is a good team. They shouldn't be taken lightly next year.

Yes, that's what they want.

However, it would be a greater miracle if he could make them see.

He has the physical skills he just doesn't have the mental toughness, football smarts, or killer instinct that a QB needs to have. Doesn't mean he can't develop it, but for now he doesn't have it. Also, he does not have good mentoring and tutoring from Les Miles and Gary Crowton.

What JJ doesn't have is an example and a tutor. Most QB's coming in have an incumbent to learn from, JJ never had that. Most recruits coming in have good quality coaching. JJ hasn't had that, obviously.

People blame RP, and I say poppycock. No one expected RP to make it 4 years at LSU and why there wasn't other recruits on the bench at that time is inexcusable.

But, yeah. JJ is in a losing situation here at LSU. I don't see a lot of promise because nothing has changed. He definitely has the tools, but the same staff is there and you just don't see any progression in JJ due to mentoring or coaching. Not sure how it will get better, but there is hope I guess. JJ looked very good vs Washington, and really backed down the rest of the season.
