I heard on the radio the other day that every cadet has to play a sport. If so, that probably has something to do with it.

I don’t think that many guys can dress for games though.

They do, I think a lot of guys play sprint football which is football for smaller people.

I saw something about that. Is it really for “smaller” people or is it like a JV league?

Don't pay him any mind. He doesn't even know how to tie his own shoes.

I’m sure they’re bound to the NCAA 60 player travel squad limit for road games.

Pretty sure you have to be under a certain weight to qualify

Those are intramural sports, not regular sports.

I think it's more that every player is already on scholarship so there's very little difference in cost. The athletic department isn't paying to house, feed, tuition, etc.

there's a weight limit. Players have to weight 178lbs or less and have at least 5% body fat. It's pretty entertaining to watch.

Only half of them dress out for football games. They also have a JV team team that plays a 9 game schedule. I'm guessing they just list both teams on their roster

They won’t all travel. Army, Navy, and Air Force sign a huge number of freshmen to account for not making it through basic, their freshmen year, or just deciding it isn’t for them. Typically by the end of their first year a bunch get cut, but get to stay in school.

It’s both. From the West Point website:
quote:

Every cadet must participate in competitive sports throughout the academic year, whether in varsity intercollegiate athletics, intercollegiate clubs, or company athletics.

quote:

Competitive Sports
-Intercollegiate (NCAA, 28 Teams)
-Club (16 Competitive Teams)
-Company Intramurals (11 Sports)

In other words, playing football is one way to satisfy the requirement. From that standpoint it makes sense that they would carry a larger roster than other D1 programs even if the majority of those players don’t see the field.

It has to be large, to compensate for casualties.
